Signs from God to the World

Recently while teaching the Introduction to the New Testament course and discussing how the apostle John presents in his gospel the works of Jesus in exactly seven miracles, which the apostle calls signs, the Lord led me to compare the purpose of the seventh sign  ‑the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead‑  with the purpose for our time of two recent events that caught everyone's attention in 2010. I am referring to the earthquake in Haiti, on January 12th, and the confinement and eventual rescue of the 33 miners in the San José mine, in Chile, on October 13th of that same year.

Although the apostle acknowledges that the deeds of Jesus were so many that "if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written",[1] he only highlights seven miracles-signs of them.

The apostle presents these seven signs as if they were seven great lessons, as in Genesis the seven days of Creation are presented, and he highlights from each of them how God establishes with signs His methodology of operation in the midst of the times. The signs are not chosen at random, they were duly selected as part of a school of the teaching of which His gospel is the textbook.

What is the Message of the Gospel?

In an ambience as theologized as in which we live, where talking about complex doctrinal issues has become almost the bread of every day, we have overlooked that the message of the Gospel is a simple, unpretentious message, that speaks to us of the love of God that even being sinners Christ died for us.

Revealing Processes

Recently, as I was preparing material for a class on the spiritual character of the calling to ministry, and the degree of revelation that the person called by God needs to have in order to be effective as a dispenser of God's mysteries, I came to think that there is a process of prior preparation for exposure to the moment of Revelation. I commented on my restlessness with another ministry and I had the answer that when God decides to reveal his mysteries, the person has no need, nor time, to prepare, God does it in the decision of his Sovereignty and the person receives it, and transmits it.

So, when God led me to compare this seventh sign with the events of the earthquake in Haiti and the captivity of the miners in the San José mine in Chile, He is showing me that there is an urgency in the Kingdom to prophetically awaken a believing people who have not realized the value of having been called chosen lineage.

It is somewhat similar to what happened in 2010 with the earthquake in Haiti and with the 33 miners trapped in the San Jose mine, Chile, which also occupied world attention; only this time the protagonists have a common factor: Children.

It is the message of the Bible, the message of an Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth, and by which all created things subsist.[1] It is the message of a God always present, who fills all things in all,[2] who, although he abhors sin, loves the sinner and delights in his Creation.

The message of a God who does not respecter of persons who, although He speaks against a nation, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; but if the nation turn from their evil, He repents of the evil that spoke about them.[3]

It is the message that breaks out among people who do not know Him, even among those who do not want to hear Him. It is the message that speaks of Peace, of restoration, of building, of restitution; the message that says, you shall be built.[4]

It is the message of the one who calls the things which be not as if they were,[5] the one who calls all things by name.[6] It is the message that the prophets described as the God of all flesh,[7] God of the spirits,[8] the God of heaven, and the God of the earth,[9] God of gods.[10] Such is the greatness of his strength, and his power and virtue.

The message of the Gospel is neither philosophical nor religious, nor is the power of its force lies in the etymology of the Word.

For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. 1st. Corinthians 4:20

It is not a message subject to the hermeneutics of the word, difficult to understand,

For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. ¹²It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? ¹³Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?    Deuteronomy 30:11-13

It is the message born of conviction, of the personal conviction that God revealed Himself and spoke, and that his instructions do not need interpretation,

But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. Deuteronomy 30:14

It was the message that was proclaimed in Jerusalem, in Judea, Samaria, and throughout the Roman Empire,

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; ⁹That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.   Romans 10:8, 9

The message of the Gospel is the same prophetic message established even before the foundation of the world,[11] it is the theme established as the foundation of the Mosaic Law,

Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? ²⁷And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Luke 24:26, 27

.. And proclaimed and established by the apostles of Jesus as the foundation of faith,
