Notes
WHAT DOES THE LORD REQUIRE?
One of the most splendid, memorable moments in all of Scripture, and even in human history, is the eloquent, poetic question and answer from an obscure prophet in the late eighth century BCE. Micah 6:8 asks, What does the LORD require?
And the reply is threefold: To do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.
We could spend our lives probing the beauty of these words, with them emblazoned in our memory. More importantly, we should spend our days letting these treasured words take on reality in our lives. God would be pleased, and we would discover the joyful reason for our existence.
In this brief book, we will explore a few things. Who was Micah? What was going on when he spoke? How did his listeners receive what he said—and how do we? Who is this God who requires
? And what might justice, kindness, and humility look like for us?
So now we pause, give thanks to God for such provocative, lovely words, and pray for openness of mind, heart, and life so we might be transformed and satisfy our deepest desire—and God’s.

MICAH THE PROPHET
We wish we knew more about Micah as a person. His parents must have been full of faith and gratitude when he was born, for they named him Micah, which in Hebrew is an exclamation, a rhetorical question, a burst of praise meaning, Who is like the Lord?
Who indeed! God is incomparable. We may say God is like the best parent ever, or a benevolent king, or the sun rising; but the name Micah rolls all those up into one and declares that God is exponentially more wonderful than them all. We never figure God out or box God in; we might pray for long life so we can continue in our quest to learn more and more about this God who is mind-bogglingly more fantastic than the sharpest mind or the most passionate heart could ever understand. Who is like the Lord?
This name, Micah, has been one of the most popular names in all of human history, in countless cultures and languages, morphing into kindred forms like Micaiah, Michael, Mike, and Miguel. Hans Walter Wolff has suggested that it may be the oldest name that has survived more than 4,000 years and remained undiminished in popularity down to the present time.
¹
Such a name is a badge of honor, and an inescapable challenge: Could Micah’s life be a humble reply to the rhetorical question
