    Full Circle - Anthony Amoi

    Chapter 1

Friday evening was abuzz at campus. Some students readied themselves to head to night clubs. A small number planned to attend the Christian night vigil. Fiona sprawled on her bed with expectation. At last, she would sample Nairobi’s night life. Her friend had promised her an unforgettable experience. She could hear a car pull outside. Grabbing her purse, she dashed outside her room.

At the back of the wheel sat Yvonne. Her face beamed with excitement as she hoped in. Though she rarely visited, Fiona liked her. Severally, she had postponed this day to Fiona’s dismay. For many days, she had patiently waited. She drove fast, keen to evade the evening traffic. Soon, they got to Willrocks Country club. The booming music ushered them in. Dozens had filled the facility. A partying mood swept through the area.

Fiona didn’t take whisky. She preferred a mild scotch wine. Their conversation was interrupted by a phone call. Yvonne’s friends had arrived. Three men dressed in neat suits approached in the company of a lady. They mood was jovial. It didn’t take long before Fiona felt at ease with her acquaintances. Just as her mind had hooked on the evening, Yvonne begged leave. She had urgent business. She left her.

The girls sat bemused by the exotic ambience that that pervaded the room. Their eyes roved from one point to another. Their murmurs were drowned by the two men who spoke in loud tones. The wax-polished floor sparkled. The air inside felt fresh and warm; though no air conditioner was visible. The thickly-sponged couches were inviting. The girls’ weight almost made them bounce on their cushions.

A thick whiff of inviting aroma rent the air. Two women filed in with trays carrying colourful porcelain mugs. The warm coffee pleased Fiona. She felt emboldened. Razor knew exactly how to raise her mood. Strangely, she felt more closely drawn to him than when they were in the club. Though he had asked her to assume control of the house, she was reticent. She preferred to be low key. All the employed staff called her ‘Ma’am’ but she didn’t fully acknowledge this. In a way, the workers secretly liked her. She knew this. Her youthful dazzling beauty made up for her lack of a trendy sense of fashion. On many occasions, she would secretly seek Molly, one of the kitchen staff’s counsel to navigate through the house.

Fiona went through the kitchen door to the courtyard.
