Chapter One
Jet
Ilooked down the road about a half mile away and saw headlights around the corner before pulling to the side and going dark. Time was running out. The unkempt grass before me glistened in the night, and the smell of gasoline wafted up. I set the gas can down at my feet and looked up at the discolored white house before me.
I saw the potential for a nice home with the right family inside, but given the current residents, it justified the junk cars and motorcycle parts in the lot, the scattered beer cans and whiskey bottles sitting on the porch, the piles of garbage in bags gathering in the corner, and the crass and vulgar conversation that came from inside the walls.
I narrowed my eyes at their flag that hung off the house by two corners. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who despised them. Several colors had been splattered along the skull and crossbones that represented who they were as a motorcycle club.
The Chaos Warriors had church that night, so I made sure to keep my eyes peeled and listen intently for the piece of shit who’d pulled the trigger on Ace. There was a lot of movement inside and outside that house. I knew he was somewhere inside. It was just a matter of getting to him. I kept myself in the shadows of the night, pressing the earpiece to my ear when their conversation stopped.
My eyes sliced from one window to the next until I was sure they were still unaware of my presence. I wasn’t worried they would spot me. I blended into the night perfectly in my black leather. My worry was the mission I had been planning to carry out before being exposed. I just wanted revenge for my MC brother.
They all filtered inside and closed the door. I didn’t move a muscle until I heard Brick’s groveling voice once again. He was their president and the one with the most felons under his belt. He didn’t seem to care about anyone else and his trigger-happy finger put him into situations he should have been put on death row for. His voice started their meeting, and I sneered at the thought of him still alive and not caring that he had taken Ace down in a single moment.
Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out the book of matches. My heart sank just a little when I accidentally pulled out the VIP passes to the Naked Lady, too, that Ace had gotten me for my birthday. They were worn and heavily creased. The upper right corner of both passes was still caked with dried blood; his blood. I had been carrying them around with me since that night. We had all been supposed to hang out there, but shit happened.
Big shit, and Ace didn’t make it.
Biting back the threat of tears, I pushed the memory from my mind. No weakness, no fear, concentrate, focus. I pulled a match from the cardboard book that protected them, and I struck it against the rough surface strip. The small flame flared up, and my eyes consumed its hope and bright color.
I let the match go and stepped back several feet. Everything slowed down and my eyes locked onto the small flame falling to the ground. I appreciated the way the flame hung onto that small stick, flickering as it hit before igniting the grass before me. The flame chased the ground, running after it, consuming it until the gasoline stopped it and kept it within the confines of the circle I’d created.
I stood heavy in my tracks until the front door opened and two large men ran out toward me. My heart palpitated fiercely, and although I wanted to run at them, I forced myself to step back into the shadows of the night. I wanted one man, only one, so I waited.
Brick walked through the front door looking frantic and wide-eyed. Who’s out there?
he shouted. Listen, you son of a bitch! Go prank someone else’s house if you know what’s good for you! I’ll put your neck in a noose and enjoy watching you die! Fucking kids.
He sounded badass, like someone who would have ripped that prankster a new one. It was too bad it would be the last thing he ever said.
My heart throbbed in my chest, pounding from the inside, screaming for me to do it. The adrenaline was like a drug, but I had learned to suppress it and control it. I needed him to know why he was going to die, but I didn’t need an audience.
A young woman in ripped blue jeans and a barely-there black halter ran off the porch, a bucket sloshing water all over her. She threw what water remained onto the dying fire and ran back into the house.
Stupid woman. Go back in the house. Nothing is going to happen.
Brick pushed the woman back in through the front door and slammed the door. He walked toward me as if sensing I was there.
I stayed still, keeping my eyes on him and the other goon still outside. My hand gripped my pistol and my heart beat so hard I felt it through my chest. I scuffed my feet against the ground, and it drew him to me like a moth to a flame. I stayed in the shadows.
"Can I
