About this ebook

Business is good for Kenny and Clay, two hitmen who've worked the trap for years. They have cleaned up any “problem” in the way of their boss’s massive operation. Business is going good, real good. But there is one problem: one of them is developing a conscious.

Can a man who kills for a living continue to operate knowing the consequences of his actions? Or will he have to deal with the life that he’s chosen?

Explore the deep underworld of organized crime, a rocky relationship between two very different business partners, and the psyche of a killer. Can a good man who does bad things for a living see the light? Or is there no hope for him once the deeds are done?

    CHAPTER 1

    SLAM!

Gary, the middle aged blue-collar mechanic slams the hood of an aging Dodge utility van. He wipes his hands as he admires the chipped, faded white paint. It’s a miracle this thing even still runs. Another job well done.

A few yards away the owner of the van approaches the shop on foot. Clay’s the middle-aged redneck one would expect behind the wheel. His graying hair, faded flannel, and ripped jeans match the van’s aesthetic quality. Clay calls out to Gary as he gets closer.

Hey Gary! Looks like I caught you at the right time. She runnin'?

Yeah I got her all fixed up. She running like it was 88' again. That's a good van you got there Clay but you need to take care of it.

I know. She's got me through a lot of jobs. I've been kind of rough on her. But she likes it like that.

Gary chuckles. You're a wild one. You ready to take her home today?

I've been walking for the last three days. How much do I owe ya'?

    Sixteen hundred.

    Clay groans. Sixteen?!

Yeah I had to replace the timing belt, fix the transmission, and...

Clay cuts him off, Come on Gary!

I'm in business to make money. Times are rough.

    Where's the family discount?

    "That was the family discount."

I can't do sixteen. How about twelve?

    Fifteen?

    Twelve.

    Fourteen?

    Clay’s hell bent. Twelve.

If I didn't know better I'd think you're trying to put me out of business Clay, Gary chuckles.

    I can't do fifteen.

    Fine. Fourteen.

I gotta do it for twelve.

You're driving a hard bargain, Gary exhales.

What are you going to do with the extra two hundred dollars anyways?

Gary walks towards his shop. The negotiation is tiring. Clay follows him, two paces behind. Gary gives in. He answers Clay.

    Nintendo.

    Nintendo?

I promised my sons I'd get them a Nintendo if they made the Honor Roll.

    Alright Gary.

Gary stops and turns around to Clay. Clay continues.

I'll cut you a deal. You need a Nintendo, right? he gives in, I give you twelve hundred, and I'll bring you a Nintendo for your boys next week.

Do you have the money on you?

"Of course I have the money," Clay mocks his mechanic.

    All of it Clay.

    Yes!

Let me see it, Gary says as he dangles the keys.

"Right here in public? I usually need a few drinks you old freak," Clay says as he pulls his pants zipper down. Gary shields his vision.

    Whoa, whoa, whoa!

That’s Clay, always willing to make a dirty joke at the expense of self dignity. He’s certainly no prude. He pulls a wad of old
