    Heralds of Mystery - X. F. Moix

    PROLOGUE

The only thing I remember from my previous life, are the moments of real terror before my arrival. It's downright simple and bewildering to remember them so easily. But, perhaps emphasizing them, I can regain my identity and find a way out of this place. When I close my eyes, I come back to that moment:

It's already dark and I'm still lost. The peaceful journey turned into a horrible nightmare through a dark forest, looking more and more frightening. The flashlight stopped working minutes after observing a disturbing wound on my side. I would not know how to calculate the exact time I was running aimlessly through the scrub vegetation. Tearing my face with foliage. The pain will not stop me, because the dread that grabs my heart surpasses it.

Fatigue is already taking its toll on my punished body. But I feel that an invisible force infuses me with the energy that I am gradually losing. It's funny, despite the low visibility and my lack of attention to the abrupt and slippery terrain, I still have not fallen on my face. Something that would be fatal, given my circumstances.

It's time to stop for a few moments to catch my breath ... I feel my wound and the dampness on my fingers, I think it has not stopped bleeding. Time is short.
