    A tired day

    The big clock in the castle tower chimed eleven times across the clouds, before the little wizard Wobbletooth finally woke up to the sound of the twelfth chime. He had fallen soundly asleep over the old book of magic that he had been reading. And even though it was the middle of the day, he would have preferred to fall straight back into a slumber. But then suddenly he thought of hot, steaming chocolate cake. That’s what the cook had promised him for dessert after lunch.

    So the deathly-tired little wizard dragged himself up from his stool in front of the writing desk. He had hardly closed his eyes the previous night either. Once again a storm had raged around the castle until dawn, as it had done for the last week, with glittering, bright lightning flashes and deafening thunder.

    He had become so dog-tired that he even forgot to be annoyed at his stupid wobbly tooth, which usually bothered him as soon as he woke up. Instead, he opened the door to the staircase, placed his foot on the first step and then closed his eyes just for a moment.

    When he woke up he was lying 99 steps lower, at the bottom of the tower staircase. He had tumbled all the way down in his sleep. He straightened himself up, feeling like he had merely turned over a few times in bed. Luckily he didn’t have any bumps or bruises.

    Outside the palace kitchen, an unpleasant burning smell wafted into the little wizard‘s nostrils. And the next moment he was almost bowled over by the palace cook, who came running out of the kitchen, weeping. In her hand she held a huge pan containing a pitch-black, charred chocolate cake.

    Now I can’t do anything with it except throw it in the rubbish, wailed the cook, as tears rolled down her cheeks.

    What happened? the little wizard wanted to know.

    Well, what do you think? replied the cake baker. I fell asleep in front of the oven. And when I woke up again, the chocolate cake had turned to charcoal.

    Well, that really is a shame, he answered sadly.

    Yes, sniffed the cook. And I’m not getting any more baking chocolate until next week.
