White canvas tents billowed in the morning breeze. The sky above was deep blue and cloudless. The quiet chatter of men and women who had grown used to living in close quarters drifted through the camp. Until the screaming started.
A moment later, two men and a woman left their tents and ran towards the noise. They went inside together, and the screaming became sounds of struggle. Then it stopped. The men and the woman came out and once again the camp fell to its usual quiet.
The camp was quiet again until later that morning. By now, people were up and about, going from tent to tent, preparing to leave for the day. Whatever they were doing, they all stopped when they heard the judder of helicopter blades and looked up to see the dark shape coming across the clear blue sky towards them.
Who do you think it is?
a man said to the woman standing beside him.
Hopefully, someone who will take him away.
There was no need to ask who she meant. He nodded, and they said no more.
The helicopter landed a hundred-metres away from the furthest tent. By that time, everyone who didn’t have something important to do (and a few who did) had gathered to watch. The door opened, and a man climbed out. He was wearing a dark suit, shirt, and tie.
