CHAPTER ONE

Is College the Right Choice for You?

Before you even begin to apply for college, you must decide if you really want to go.  I know that sounds like a strange statement, but many young adults find themselves in college classes, wracking up student loans, and wondering if they should even be there.

Just because you have done well in high school, have academic or athletic scholarships, your parents and grandparents went to college, or that the general expectation is that you earn a higher education; doesn’t necessarily mean that the college path right after high school is the best fit for you.  I’ve seen first hand how expectations lead to a not-so-pleasant college experience.  My brother graduated third in his class, had a full-ride scholarship to a major university, nearly scored perfect on his SAT and had enough AP credit to enter college as a sophomore, but his heart just wasn't in it.  I knew that and even tried to broach the subject with my parents, but they wouldn't even consider it.  So, off to college, he went and some 15 years later, he earned his degree.  Not because he was goofing off, but because he wanted to experience other things in life and had other priorities. 

He met and fell in love with a wonderful girl and they started their family.  That was his priority and nearly 20 years later, they are still together and their children are amazing!  He did eventually earn his degree - his path was a little different than most.  And, I'm here to say,
