Sebastiano, Leonardo, and Isabella, whom I love with all of me.

    CHAPTER ONE

Vivian was tired of taking care of her husband. It had been almost two months since his heart attack, and he was still going back and forth from the hospital.

All because of that woman! she said to herself.

She didn’t understand much about medical procedures, but she did understand surgery. The doctors had said that her husband had undergone a valve replacement a few days after his heart attack but that hadn’t taken care of the issue. He needed more surgery. I wonder if all that lovemaking with that woman caused his heart to fail? I can’t ask the doctors; they’ll just laugh at me! This is so embarrassing!

Within two weeks they inserted a stent in his heart. When she asked what that was for, the surgeon told her that it was to swell the valve, so the blood can flow smoothly. Once that surgery was complete, he was in ICU for another week. Rehab began the next day after he awoke. Vivian was with him at all times. She seemed concerned in front of the doctors, nurses, and therapists, but deep down she couldn’t care less if he lived or died. As far as she was concerned, he was dead to her. The moment she found out how he betrayed her and his family, any feelings she had for him were gone. She had forgiven him time and time again, but not this time. This was the last straw and she would put up with his behavior no longer.

When they finally allowed him to go home, Vivian made arrangements to have a nurse come to the house to take care of him. She couldn’t stand to touch him.

I am very weak, and I have a bad back, so I can’t take care of my husband.

Very well, ma’am, we’ll send a nurse to your home three times a week.

    That would be fine.

Good. Here. Please fill out these forms, the nurse said as she pushed a small pile of papers towards Vivian.

    Oh, I have a question.

    Yes?

Would it be possible to have a male nurse assist my husband? He is very shy, you know, and I believe he would be uncomfortable with a female nurse.

Of course! There’s a spot on the top form where you have that option, she said as she showed the section to Vivian.

Vivian nodded in agreement. Good. This way there will be no risk of yet another love affair. I will certainly not put up with that going on under my roof. Even if Aaron isn’t healthy enough for that, I am not going to risk it.

    Thank you very much!

Vivian filled in the forms diligently and made sure that Male Nurse box was checked. Before she handed all the paperwork back to the nurse, she double-checked to make sure everything was right.

    Here you go.

She went back to Aaron’s room. He was sitting up and clicking the TV remote.

What are you watching? she asked coldly.

    Nothing much.

Well, I have good news. Seems like they are going to discharge you.

Oh, really? his face lit up. He’d had enough of hospitals for a lifetime.

Really. The nurse asked me to complete some paperwork, though. It seems you will need a home nurse.

    What for?

Rehab, therapy, medications, and so on.

I see, he said as he continued to surf the channels. He wanted to go home and contact Giuliana. He missed her terribly. She saved his life and he owed her a big thank you. Even with all the medication that he was taking, just the thought of her aroused him. Not enough to be noticed by Vivian, but enough that he felt it. He hadn’t felt this way in weeks. He absolutely had to see his precious Giuliana—and soon.

With all the discharge paperwork completed, a nurse brought in a wheelchair.

No, no! I don’t want a wheelchair! I can walk on my own! It was highly offensive that they treated him like an old man. He was far from being old. Damn it!

Hospital policy, Mr. Gallagher. Sorry, the nurse said in a snarky voice.

Aaron didn’t say another word. He sat on the chair and pouted. Vivian shook her head. The last straw is coming soon! I can feel it! She grabbed his bag and her purse, and they all left the room. Vivian exchanged some small talk with the nurse, but Aaron kept quiet. He didn’t care about that stupid small talk. He needed to get back to work and most of all get back with his beloved Giuliana. This hollowness turned him into a grumpy old man.

A taxi was waiting for them outside the main entrance. Finally, he freed himself from that restrictive chair and sat in the passenger seat. Pain shot into his chest as he most probably moved too quickly. But he hid it as best as he could. Tears welled up in his eyes, but he kept his eyes fixed on the activities outside his window. He was angry and hurt. Angry because everyone treated him like an old man with a foot in the grave ever since the heart attack and hurt because he didn’t want to be treated like that. His life was a mess. He felt like a teenager inside, especially when he thought about Giuliana; all the years just peeled away. But when he tried to do anything physical, the pain was immense. It made him think of his employees who would call in sick because they were in pain. He had to give them time off, but he never understood why they couldn’t come in and work at a desk—even if they were in pain. Now, he understood. I can’t even do simple things like pulling up my underwear or buttoning my shirt. Even sitting and standing was a chore. He couldn’t wait to get better, but he wondered when it was going to happen. He had followed everything he was ordered to by the doctors, nurses, and therapists, but he felt like his body wasn’t responding quickly enough. When he asked his cardiologist about that, he was simply told, It takes time. You do realize that time is the best healer, right?

    I suppose.

Come on! Cheer up! It’s not the end of the world, you know! You’re alive and that’s all that matters.

Aaron did his best to be positive. He read a blog online stating that a positive attitude would help him heal better and faster, but he was wrong. Damn internet! Every time he looked at Vivian, his positive attitude disappeared.

The taxi driver helped Aaron get out of the car and, at the request of his wife, helped him walk to the front door. The driver received a hefty tip for that. Once inside, Aaron headed for the living room. Vivian had all the furniture removed to accommodate her husband’s convalescence. It now was a hospital room. The only thing left was the television set. Aaron hated it but he had no choice. He hated watching TV all day long, and when he tried to contact the office to see if there was work he could do, everybody he spoke to either put him on hold or passed him to his secretary. Another person he hated with a passion. He had wanted to get rid of her back when she betrayed him, but she couldn’t because he had no lawful reason. His reasons were strictly private, and that wouldn’t fly with the labor board.

Hello Aaron! How are you doing?

I’m good, Olga. I’m ready to work from home. Please send some quotes to work on.

I’m afraid that’s not possible. Vivian gave us strict orders to leave you be, so you can heal. She’ll let you know when you can begin working again, she said smugly.

What are you talking about? She has no control over me!

Oh, yes she does. As a matter of fact, the company president agrees with her and he is waiting for her permission.

Damn you! Damn all of you! he shouted, slamming the phone down.

Well, I never! she exclaimed as she hung up the phone. A sly smile came across her face. Ha! He deserves it! He was such a playboy, and her best friend Vivian didn’t deserve it. She is a good woman.

Vivian had heard the entire conversation that day and was smiling maliciously. What satisfaction it was for her to have gained all that power overnight! She loved it as much as she loathed her husband. She tried to talk to him, but he wouldn’t listen. Fine. He could act like a baby all he wanted. Bottom line, she was in charge and he was not going back to work anytime soon.

Are you hungry? his wife asked.

Hungry? Yes, he was hungry. He was hungry for Giuliana’s kisses, hugs and sexy voice and her body and her sex and…

    No, thanks.

    All right, dear.

He continued surfing the channels, same as he had done in the hospital. Slowly, he fell asleep.

There she was! As beautiful and sexy as ever. He held her tight and began to kiss her all over, but she wasn’t responding. Then he found himself hugging a marble statue of her. She giggled and waved at him. She quickly ran away from him and got into a red sports car convertible. He noticed Bobby at the wheel, and he noticed her kissing him as he drove off.

    Giuliana! Don’t leave me! Don’t leave me! I love you! I can’t live without you! I can’t live…

As the clouds took her out of his sight, he heard a voice he didn’t like. It was Vivian.

    Wake up!

He blinked a few times and woke up with a horrible headache.

Wha…oh…ah… he couldn’t speak. What was happening? Why couldn’t he speak?

You fool! You were calling HER name! You were dreaming of her, weren’t you? she yelled. She couldn’t believe her ears.

Aaron tried to speak but he couldn’t. Yes, he called her name! Yes, he wanted her now more than ever! Yes, he couldn’t go on living without her! But for some strange reason, he couldn’t hear Vivian yell, only vaguely. How could that be? Surely, she was yelling and very loudly, according to the look on her face and her gestures.

Do you hear me, you foolish man? she asked as she grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him. But all she got out of him were grunts and moans. Then she slapped him on the face, but all she got out of him was a horrified look.

She hit me! He felt that, and he wanted to
