    The Backpack 

    An owl hooted as Joey Sinclair and his tag-along buddy, Bateman Jones, booked it out of the dense backwoods in the dead of night to a rust bucket of a pickup truck near the dirt road.  

    Hell yeah. Joey shouted into the night sky. With his pretty boy smile and dark greaser style hair, he stripped himself of the black leather backpack, opened the passenger side door and tossed it on top his welding glasses.  

    Bateman shook his head and ran his fingers through his dirty blonde hair. Man, I’m not so sure about this. 

    I haven’t been surer in my sorry excuse of a life. Joey replied sporting a Cheshire grin. They are the ones who threw it in that hole. They shouldn’t have left the bag. What luck that tonight was when we brought out that haul of wood?   

    He glanced back at Bateman, who was scratching like a cat with fleas. He asked, What’s with the nerves? It’s not like we robbed a bank. 

    Joey whipped open the truck door and snatched the bag off the worn seat. He unzipped it and yanked out a stack of twenty-dollar bills. See this? Bateman nodded.  This, Joey shook the stack, is our ticket out of this state. Aren’t you tired of living a life that gets you nowhere?
