INTRODUCTION
MAKING PAPER AIRPLANES WITH TAPE? WHAT AN IDEA!
I have been making paper airplanes since I was a kid. I bet you have too. You probably have made a few origami airplanes, ones that fly far or flit about.
Paper airplanes come in two types. There are origami airplanes, and then there are, for lack of a better term, paper gliders. Origami airplanes are gliders too, of course, but they are made from one whole piece of paper, folded up, without cutting and without gluing. They are simple and can be made anywhere, any time. But there is a limit to what you can make just by folding up a single sheet.
Paper gliders, on the other hand, use heavier paper that is cut and fastened together to make an almost infinite variety of different shapes. They can be fanciful, or they can have very high performance, or they can exhibit both attributes at once. But they take more time to build and require tools.
I’ve always wanted to combine the simplicity of origami airplanes with the variety and performance of paper gliders. But there seemed to be no way of avoiding the bother of using glue, which can be tedious and time consuming. Until, one day, it occurred to me to try using tape instead! I had never thought of tape as something I could use on my gliders. Would it be easier? Would it work?
The answer to both questions is YES! The very first prototype I made nearly flew right out of sight, circling higher and higher in a thermal.
That plane, The Scorpion (page 30), proved the revolutionary potential of tape. The rest of the planes in this kit make good use of tape construction as well—interesting shapes, quickly and easily assembled. Tape is just as strong as glue, easier to use, and, surprisingly, even more resilient. You still need to assemble the models carefully for them to fly really well, making sure the wings and fuselage aren’t twisted. But tape is easy to use and it’s easy to fix mistakes.
Take your time, enjoy the process, and look forward to amazing flights!
You’ll do great!
