    About the Author

    Chapter One

Jennifer pulled her shirt off the hanger in the badly disarray of mess in her closet. Jennifer looked around in disgust as she always did everyday while swearing to herself that tomorrow is the day the closet gets cleaned out. Jennifer closed the closet door gladly and proceeded to the bedroom where she sat on the bed to get her thoughts together. Jennifer pulled her hair behind her ears and then released the hair again, she chuckled. Jennifer could never decide on which way felt more comfortable to her. It didn’t really matter though, as she knew she was no raving beauty that is looked at twice but, a simple person that can think on her own and shouldn’t and didn’t care what anyone else thought. Jennifer sat on the bed and stared in the mirror hanging on the wall across the room. She poked her lips out and then drew her lips back in. Jennifer chuckled. Jennifer saw no improvement and gave up on looking better for the day. She pulled the shirt over her head and put each leg into her jeans. Jennifer sucked her stomach in to button the jeans. Tomorrow she would start exercising.

The doorbell chimed, and Max sounded out his shrill bark protecting his territory. Ok Max. That’s enough. I hear the door. Jennifer walked over to the door, waiting before unlocking the door and first looking through the blinds. The sun was shining through and the outlining image of a familiar figure came to mind. It was Maggie, so she went back and unlocked the door. Maggie, what’s up? Jennifer asked. Maggie entered the doorway and reached down to pet Max.

Same ole Same ole Maggie muttered. Maggie ruffled Max’s hair a few more times, smiling at the grin that Max was displaying. Max thoroughly enjoyed a good petting on the forehead.

Jennifer canted I am so glad you are here Maggie. I have not decided on what to do with myself today. Since I have been unemployed, I have trouble scheduling my day once I have applied for all the jobs that are listed online. Wow, you can feel the heat from outside just in the few seconds I held the door open.

Maggie chuckled and replied I know, the weather keeps changing for the worse every year. Soon we can take vacation in February and go to the beach.

Jennifer laughed as she was retreating to the living room and thought to herself but caught herself her saying out loud, Yea, vacation will be put off again just like my closet. It always seemed like something got in Jennifer’s way of doing the things she wanted. Vacations, adventure, and relationships. This time it was on her. Jennifer was unhappy with her last job and regrettably had quit at a time when she needed the work the most. Jennifer hated herself for that and did not miss the knots in her stomach every morning which made it especially hard to get out the door to make it to work.

Maggie was a dear friend who had been in Jennifer’s life since she had become a teenager. They went to school together and hung out on Friday and Saturday nights. They did a lot together. Maggie’s favorite thing to do as kids included roller skating and playing pool at the public pool halls. Maggie was a popular girl. Although not so popular with the girls, the boys adored her. Maggie was tom boyish and her physic was cute. Her personality was blunt but funny. Jennifer was always in awe of Maggie’s relationship with the boys. Jennifer was not as cute, kind of homely and not overly popular with the boys. Jennifer was an extravert and always liked to hang out with Maggie since she was the one that was popular and had a car.

Jennifer remembered a time when she was madly in love with a boy that hung out with them at times. He was an older boy, but Jennifer was hypnotized with his eyes. His eyes were big, brown and his eye lashes were longer than any girls. Jennifer couldn’t wait to spend time over at Maggie’s with the hope that Mike would be there. Jennifer often wondered what ever become of Mike as the years went by. As time went on after High School, the two girls went their separate ways. Maggie had gotten married and Jennifer had stuck to endless dates, going nowhere, and relationships that included one failed marriage. She poured herself into a career that lasted for years until she was laid off. Jennifer had landed another job but did not care for the atmosphere. Jennifer ended up quitting that job, which put her in the position she found herself in today.

Maggie and Jennifer sat on the coach and reminisced as usual about things they did together growing up and how things turned out so different from what they had expected. Maggie sat on the left side of the yellow, short coach and held a pillow that was fading from wear on her lap, to keep Max’s claws from digging into her legs. Jennifer yelled at Max to stay down but it seemed hopeless as Maggie would allow Max to jump on her for affection. Jennifer eyed Maggie as she continued to pet Max, Max panting not from thirst but from excitement for the welcome companionship of the visitor. Max, settling down, nestled in between Maggie and Jennifer to protect them.

Maggie uttered. What have you been watching on Netflix?

Jennifer replied, Criminal Minds. You know I like my crime dramas and especially with the good-looking actors they have on the show. Jennifer asserted herself into crime dramas every chance she could. She loved adventure and often thought about being a PI when she was much younger. The conversation continued, and Maggie went to the refrigerator to pop the top on a beer. Maggie opened the refrigerator door and eyed the dozen beers she had brought over.

Jennifer asked Maggie, Don’t you think it is a little early for booze? Jennifer could never get over people drinking before five in the afternoon.

Maggie chuckled and replied, No, I think two in the afternoon is fine. Hey, mind your own business Chica. Jennifer laughed as she knew that Maggie had brought more than two and decided if you can’t beat um, join um. Jennifer went to the cabinet and mixed herself a Vodka Collins and sat back down. She clicked play on the T.V and they both quieted down to watch another episode of Criminal Minds.

The clouds were rolling in as they normally did in the afternoons and the thunder was getting closer in sound. Maggie had left to go home, and Jennifer was settling in for a night of cooking light (always in preparation of the power going out) and watching a movie to take the edge off from watching the same thing all the time. Jennifer had been told she was binge watching but refused to believe she could be additive to something materialistic. The truth was job hunting was confined to online now and did not take her a whole day to fill out applications unless they included assessments. The assessments were tedious and thank God not all jobsites required them. Jennifer was loyal to finding a job but was having no luck. She had only another month of resources before she would find herself in a whole lot of trouble financially. Since her recent breakup, Jennifer had discovered that her ex had paid for a lot of what they did for entertainment and that she didn’t have any income to rely on.

Jennifer was a modest girl, simple in her appearance. Jennifer tried to maintain her appearance, trying new hair do’s, keeping up with the latest styles in clothes. Jennifer often wondered why she tried to keep up with the other women because her Husband never looked at her with any interest. Jennifer had been married to a man that took her for granted and abused her mentally and sometimes physical abuse had taken place. The physical abuse wasn’t enough to seek refuge but was enough to end her relationship with good riddance. Jennifer knew one day she would meet someone to share her commonalities with and be happy but right now wasn’t the time. Jennifer retreated to the bathroom, reached down, and turned the hot water on in the bathtub. Jennifer sat on the edge and daydreamed as the water filled the tub.

Jennifer enjoyed a hot bath, sometimes with bubbles. She would lay in the tub for what seemed hours and relax so she could sleep. Jennifer delved into oblivion but caught herself before drowning. She opened her eyes wide and started shaving her legs. After the luxurious bath, Jennifer put her pajamas on and settled into bed.

Sleep never comes to the weary or the mind that doesn’t shut down. A thousand thoughts would prevent sleep from coming and the silence seemed not to be silent at all as she lay in bed. It was so silent that you could hear the worn wood talk to her as the nails made grinding noises and creaked in the house, and Jennifer popping her head up, wondering if someone was in the house only to find out it was the house talking. Jennifer lived in an older home, built in the sixties. The houses were built much better then, no prefab which meant something to Jennifer, yet the wood was old and had seen better days. The creaking of the floor reminded Jennifer of her Mom’s birth home in the Country. Jennifer remembered going to the house in the country as a child and going up the creaky stairs, one step at a time, scared to death that a monster would grab her at the top of the stairs. What Jennifer remembered the most was at the top of the stairs she would stand terrified, unable to move as a figure would be staring at her from across the room. This figurine was indeed just a mannequin. Jennifer being the frail shy little girl that she was, would run back down the stairs and climb into her Mother’s lap.

There were other scenarios that happened to Jennifer when she was a child that warranted her caution at night. Jennifer also experienced a reoccurring dream for most of her life. Jennifer dreamed that a man would be lurking outside, getting closer and closer to her bedroom window to make his way into the bedroom to kill her. He was dressed as a dark, mysterious tall man in a trench coat and hat. His hat would be tilted down to the left to show a shadow instead of his facial features. Jennifer continued to have these dreams into her twenties. Jennifer did not like sleeping in the house alone. It seemed like each sound prevented her from falling asleep or just when she drifted off the air conditioner would kick on and scare her.

There was a screeching sound from the other room. Jennifer jerked upright in bed. Damn, she thought. Jennifer was tired of not being able to sleep. Jennifer rolled over and tried to close her eyes again. Her eyes shut so tight that Jennifer opened her eyes again for some relief. Jennifer closed her eyes gently this time to relax and thought of good things to assist her in going to sleep. Jennifer drifted off to sleep. Occasionally Jennifer would wake up to hear Max scratching from his dry skin or moaning as he tried to get comfortable on the floor.

As Jennifer reached a point of dosing off again, she heard another sound coming from the other end of the house. It was a crashing sound this time. Jennifer rolled onto the floor and with heart throbbing sounds out of her chest tried to lift the mattress that housed the gun she hid so carefully under the mattress. Oh God, she thought. What would come next? What would she do? Max is barking and growling. Max is at the bedroom door scratching to get out. The hair on his back is standing straight up. This is not typical of Max and Jennifer knew someone or something was in the house.

    Panic stricken, and almost
