Trained for Sin - Sylvia Tara Dyer

    Chapter One

    Board Meetings and Small Talk

    Vanessa

I try to stifle another yawn as Carter drones on and on about his statistics and pie charts, in that horrible monotone way I can’t help but tune out. He’s a good accountant — the best I’ve ever had, to be honest — but he really needs to learn to present better. Since he took the floor at these meetings, he’s just never managed to hold my interest. But I can tell he’s losing the other board members, too, and I know I have to step in. Important decisions need to be made today, and there is no way I’m going to let the last nine years of my life go to waste just because I hired my accountant for his brains and not his social skills.

Can I stop you right there, Carter? I interrupt. I’m sure we’d all love to hear the rest of the statistics, but we’re running out of time. Not a lie. How about you just give us the highlights for the rest of your report, and we take a twenty minute break before we come back to make the final decision?

Several pairs of shoulders sag in relief. I allow myself a small smile and settle back into my chair while Carter skips all his calculations and offers just the final totals. He manages to wrap things up in under five minutes. I shake my head a little. We could have been done hours ago if he’d just done this from the start.

Checking my phone as I leave the boardroom, I see there are no calls or messages – thank god for that – but it’s already two o’clock. Shit! At this rate, I’m definitely going to be late.

There she is — the great Vanessa Haystings. Owner and CEO of the best coffee shop and bakery nation-wide.

I’d hardly call it nation-wide, Em. I smile at my best friend as she falls into step beside me and we walk down the hall together. Emily must have been waiting in the hallway for at least an hour now. I have no idea how she manages to find the time in her busy schedule to wait for me after every big meeting, but it means the world to me that she does,

So, you opening the new location or not? she asks.

No idea. We still need to do the final vote.

You’re not done yet? You’ve been in there for ages.

These things take time, you know. The look she gives me as the words leave my lips tells me exactly what she thinks of my answer.

    It’s Carter, isn’t it?

You guessed it. I love that man to bits, but he really needs to learn to summarize.

That he does. Emily flashed me a bright, wide smile — her trademark. Have lunch with me? She doesn’t wait for me to answer before she slips her arm through mine and begins to steer me towards the elevator. I don’t put up a fight.

My office is upstairs, I point out as she pushes the button for the ground floor.

True, but the cafeteria is downstairs.

But my office is quieter. I can just have them send something up.

Emily barely gives the elevator a chance to ding and open the doors properly before she starts pushing me towards the double doors ahead of us. Not a chance, Nessie. Just because you’ve managed to take your dad’s old business to new a new level and make a fortune for yourself doesn’t mean you’re too good for us mere mortals. It can only do you good to remember your humble beginnings.

I can’t help but smile at how typical Emily’s behavior is. It’s probably what I love most about her: she never changes. She’s the
