    5 days before Christmas

THE FIERCE BLIZZARD BLEW ALL through the night with an unceasing wind that whooshed through the little town. It hadn’t given out even a bit since it had started and it didn’t seem like it would be coming to an end any time soon.

Little Suzy sat on the seat of her window ledge in her room staring out into the dark, cold night. Her dark auburn, Shirley Temple, curls hung high in a neat ponytail. Tears that wouldn’t seem to come to an end kept falling one by one. Losing her mother at the tender age of eight had been difficult, and being that it had only been a few weeks since, it didn’t feel as if it would get any easier.

Suzy took a deep breath and watched as the snow continued falling from the sky and onto the already fully covered ground. It appeared as though a white blanket had wrapped her street completely. Holding on tightly to her teddy bear, the most recent birthday present from her mother, Suzy wiped at a few falling tears.

A large figure appeared in the doorway, but she hadn’t noticed. She was too fixated on the falling snow, imaging that she was amid one of those flakes. He watched her only for a few seconds before deciding to make his presence known. Suzy turned then to face him.

Sweetheart, why don’t you come downstairs and grab a bite to eat?

Her father waited for her to say something, anything. At times, she wouldn’t even acknowledge him, so this was an improvement.

    I’m not hungry, Daddy.

Suzy, you’ve got to eat something. You’re going to get really sick if you keep doing this, he urged her.

    No.

He walked over to her then, taking a seat next to his only child. Never in a million years had Jim Dolton thought he’d be raising his little girl all by himself. Having kids had never been something he’d ever imagined having in his lifetime. That had all changed once he had met Janice. She had always been the one who wanted the kids. She had always been the one who kept him going whenever it came to anything. Once she had left him, taken away by a rare heart condition, he felt so alone and didn’t know how in the world he would ever make it.

He missed Janice so much. She had been his whole life, his whole world and now that she was gone, he had wanted to drink his life away. But, he knew he couldn’t do that. Janice would never have wanted him to do something like that and leave their only daughter all alone. Losing her mother had been devastating enough that if she were to lose her father too, what would happen to her?

His daughter still had her whole teenage years ahead of her, and that scared the crap out of him. How was he supposed to get through that being a single father? He had no idea what was the first thing about raising a teenage girl. What was he supposed to do when she got her period, or worse yet… boys?

He shuddered just thinking about it. Thankful that he still had some years before all that would take place, he placed a gentle arm around his little Suzy. Without her, he probably would
