    Gena hurried down the hallway carpeted with short, grasslike plants. Of course it couldn’t be actual grass. Whatever the plant was, it came from Catalpa. As did all the plants in the Consulate. The Catalpans demanded that they be allowed to bring their native plants to Earth. Something about the energy the plants gave off being necessary to the Catalpans’ well being. And the Catalpan’s got whatever they wanted from the Unity, since they created and controlled the most important parts of Unity technology.

    She entered the outer door, closed it, then opened the inner one to the Maintenance Room and stared up at the communications system hardware. It hung down from the ceiling, surrounded by the glittering lights of the Catalpan systems which lined the walls. A pervasive smell of dampness hung in the air here. It smelled like a heavy rain had just passed through. It always did and she never understood why.

    The human system was down. Again.

    She closed the lightweight inner door behind her. It was made of clear plastic-like material called niro. Stronger than metal and invented by the Tolpians. The anti-grav was stronger here. She barely had to use the handholds to pull herself up the wall. She slightly unzipped the high collar of her jumpsuit. It was warmer here too. Almost tropical. The system had been made to cool itself, but its normal temperature was hotter
