    INTRODUCTION

Apologetics? What a strange word. I’ll agree with you, it is a strange word. Sometimes Christians ask, What do I have to apologize about? Actually, nothing!  The word apologetics simply means to give a defense of what you believe. Have you ever been in a situation where you wished you had an answer about the Christian faith, and stumbled your way through an explanation of the gospel, or said nothing at all? I can relate. In my early Christian days when I had to defend my faith in some way, I shrank back and said nothing. Why open my mouth and embarrass myself? I thought. As Christians we know we should share our faith, but let’s be real- sharing our Christian faith can be hard work. The good news is we live in an amazing time in history. The amount of information available to defend the Christian faith is outstanding! The fact that you have picked up this booklet is an indication you desire to be obedient to God by sharing and defending your Christian faith.

This book is called Share with Confidence: A Simple Introduction to Christian Apologetics because it barely scratches the surface of this subject. Since there is so much to discover that defends what we believe as Christians, it is hard to narrow down to the main foundational issues. From my 20 years of fulltime missionary work on college campuses, and witnessing in general, I believe that the existence and nature of God as well as the purpose and credibility of the Bible are the foremost ones to defend. God really doesn’t need defending because the magnificence of creation speaks for itself, and the Bible can speak for itself if someone actually reads it with an open mind.  But the devil is the author of lies, and these lies create barriers to thinking critically about God, or to even opening a Bible. Apologetics, then, is not only defending the gospel, but sharing the truth so that the devil’s lies can be replaced with truth. Hopefully what will follow from learning the truth is an encounter with the living God and His Son Jesus Christ.
