    Foreword

What a great way to help us think through what we believe (or if we believe!) in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Jan Keats has written a thought-provoking, soul-blessing book, helping us to think through the fundamentals of our faith.

We met in extraordinary circumstances, 9/11 having just happened. I found myself in Gambo, Newfoundland at a Salvation Army church along with the passengers from Flight 929 United! I was attempting to return to Chicago from Russia when the twin towers went down. We were cared for as only the army can, for six days till we traveled back to the States. During those days I watched Jan live out these principles of life in Christ and for Christ among us.

Touching on principles of the Christian life Jan makes the application unmistakable. I like the format as we can take the learning in bite-sized pieces and digest it at our own pace and in our own time. Surely with the world in the turmoil it is in we should get serious about what we believe and why we believe it! The time is short; the days are evil.

I have a theory that people the world over have not rejected Jesus, they haven’t had a chance to hear the Gospel and respond. Let’s give them this chance. After all someone gave it to us! This book shows us how.

What began as a secular conversation about the community turned into a challenge to be ready in all situations. I surprised myself; I was prepared. I had taken my Bible into the office with me to prepare for my next visit with an elderly lady—not realizing that I would need that actual reference before me. The Scripture that I had selected to read was just what I needed to share with the student.

The medical student with whom I had a meeting that day was Chantal. We engaged in a wonderful conversation about my community. After about ten minutes or so, she caught me off guard and changed the conversation. I like a good challenge, she said, as she stretched her hands back over her head, leaning
