ABOUT DANTE
Dante Alighieri is regarded as one of the most significant Italian poets and one of the most brilliant writers of ancient European medieval times. Even though he gained fame for his long poem, Divine Comedy
, he was also recognized as a prose writer, literally theorist, philosopher, and political thinker. When many poets and writers wrote in Latin, Dante used Tuscan dialect. This talent helped him to enable the common man to enjoy his work and also inspired many writers like Petrarch and Boccaccio. He played a major role in the development of Italian literature and for this, he is often referred to as the Father of Italian Language
.
Historians believe that Dante was born in 1265 in the city of Florence into a noble family of ancient lineage. His father Alighiero di Bellincione was a money lender. According to historians, he was a Guelph whose members supported the Pope. His mother Bella belonged to the Abati family. Unfortunately, his mother died when he was just nine years old and he was his parents’ only child. Later his father again got married. His education began at his home and after that, he joined a Franciscan school at Santa Croce. From this school, only Dante inculcated an interest in other subjects like Tuscan poetry, which paved the way for him to explore the Occitan
