    The Man on Stanage Edge

    Chapter One

    The Stranger on the Cliff

Sophie laughed heartily. She was so happy, all alone, miles from anywhere and everyone. This was the first time she had ever been miles from everyone, and she was enjoying it so much!

Sophie, being a sociable girl, normally didn’t like to be alone and generally surrounded herself with people. This was a rare occasion, but a special one. This was Sophie’s last day at Derby University and very importantly, her last day with Aunt Dorothy. That was enough for any girl to be happy – to be miles away from Aunt Dorothy.

Sophie knew that she really shouldn’t have rambled out onto Stanage Edge on her own. She knew she ought to be at her aunt’s packing ready for tomorrow’s journey – the journey that was going to change her entire life. Sophie knew that she had so many things to do, that she had abandoned, as she rushed out the door on her little adventure out into the national park. She knew all this, but she just didn’t care!

Sophie just had to get away by herself, if only to think over her glorious future which would be so different from her past. She had always wanted to climb up onto the cliffs overlooking the magnificent Dark Peak landscape and those rocks and formations. Aunt Dorothy would never allow her to do it, still thinking of her as a ten or twelve year old girl, when in fact, she was now twenty-one. Today, on a whim, she had taken the bit between the teeth and here she was, standing on Stanage Edge.

Breathless and with glowing cheeks and windswept hair, she had clambered on top of the cliff. Sophie stood there for a while, panting a little and admiring the rolling landscape. She was completely unconscious what a beautiful picture she made, standing there with her hair scattered by the fresh wind. What did it matter what she looked like? She had the cliffs all to herself today, didn’t she? But did she?

    Enjoying life, eh?

Sophie physically jumped at the sound of a man’s voice coming from...where? She had never been so startled.  It hadn’t crossed her mind that there was anyone else up on the cliffs with her. She hadn’t seen anyone or dreamed of having any company apart from the birds. And this man’s voice had suddenly come from nowhere. She span round like a top.

Oh! she shrieked in surprise and then she saw him.

He was half lying on a rock, a little way off, with his back against another rock. Sophie had actually passed within a few feet from him, but hadn’t noticed him, and may not have ever noticed him, if he hadn’t spoken to her. She drew in a deep breath. She didn’t know what to do – except stare at the man lying there...and stare...and stare. Sophie suddenly felt very vulnerable.

He smiled, but didn’t move. If he had got up on to his feet and moved toward her, Sophie would probably have bolted. She was indeed preparing to run if necessary. Fortunately, he didn’t move...he remained where he was, lazily smiling at her. In fact, he had a very pleasant smile, Sophie couldn’t help but notice. It was a reassuring smile.

He was older than Sophie, perhaps twenty-six or twenty-seven. His face was slightly tanned and his eyes were dark, under long sexy lashes. Sophie was well aware that this was a very handsome young man in front of her. Although his face was grave, his smile lighted it up beautifully. As a bonus, his voice was extremely smooth and agreeable to the ear.

I’m sorry, he said with an air of amusement, I startled you.

Yes! No! Yes! Sophie stuttered in confusion.

You thought there was no one up here?

    Yes, that’s right

That’s too bad. Am I spoiling the view for you? he smirked.

Oh, no! she replied rather too quickly and rather too loudly.

I can go if you’d like...

No. No. Why would I want you to go? Sophie asked. You have as much right to be here as I do. I was just startled. I didn’t know there was someone here and when you spoke...

I shouldn’t have spoken, he said
