About this ebook

Robert Townsend looked across the table at the new boarder in the Underhill home. He seemed slightly older than Robert; but then, Robert was older than anyone else in the room, even though his stated age was 25.

He caught Robert’s eye. Robert nodded to him as he took a seat.

Mrs. Underhill, a thin and reedy woman, placed a tureen of stew on the table.

Robert turned to the new man. I’m Robert Townsend.

    Abraham Woodhull.

The two men shook hands like commoners. Robert took the ladle as Mrs. Underhill cut up some bread. Robert poured some of the mysterious stew into his bowl. It contained more liquid than vegetables or meat. The rations were tight because of the soldiers’ needs for their winter quarters.

Mrs. Underhill smiled as she went back into the kitchen. Abraham took the ladle. Robert broke the bread into his stew.
