Chapter 1
Samantha Mathewson woke up early Saturday morning to the sound of Delilah barking incessantly. Delilah was her pride and joy. A beautiful black Chihuahua she had rescued as a puppy. Anyone who could harm an innocent animal always made her blood boil. She rolled over with a sigh and looked into the huge brown eyes of her dog.
Would it kill you to let me sleep in a bit?
Delilah wagged her backside excitedly which Samantha took as a yes, it would kill her to let her sleep in. She stretched and yawed simultaneously and then slowly allowed her feet to touch the ground. As if on cue Delilah drug her slippers to her human, one at a time. Samantha smiled and patted her on the head.
Thanks pretty girl.
Delilah barked before darting out of the room. Samantha yawned once more as she rolled her shoulders and snatched her velour robe off the hook behind her door. Slipping it on she slowly started making her way down the hallway, only to have Delilah skid into her. Apparently Samantha was taking too long.
Hold on, geez, I really need to teach you, patience.
Moments later she was outside the house waiting for Delilah to take care of her business. She tightened her robe as the cool September breeze blew by her. The weather was definitely starting to change. The air smelled different as the leaves started to wither around her. She smiled as Delilah pounced into a small pile of leaves that had formed underneath the large Beech tree.
Come on girl, let’s get breakfast.
At the word breakfast, Delilah popped her head out of the leaves, her ears perked up and her tail began to wag. Whoever said that dogs didn’t understand the meaning of words surely hadn’t ever lived with one. Delilah bounded forth and actually passed Samantha, sliding onto the linoleum floor causing Samantha to laugh riotously.
Don’t you ever learn?
she said, patting the dog on the head.
Samantha went about her morning routine of feeding Delilah and drinking a full cup of coffee before showering. She was planning on going into town. She didn’t need anything in particular she simply wanted to get out of the house. So after she had changed into her jeans and sweater she headed out.
The town of Grieselton was formed centuries ago by a group of Dutch immigrants who had set up a colony in the area. At the time it was mostly all wooded terrain. The colonist cleared the trees and set up homes in the area. It was originally named Bosville due to the forest that surrounded the town. Now, rumor had it that one day a young man wandered into the woods and came upon the devil who invaded the young boy, causing him to kill himself. An
