About this ebook

His past is catching up with him

Tiboth escaped the monastic discipline of Chen-Strary, called towards the mainland by an unknown force. To evade the Elders seeking to return him, he takes a circuitous route around the many islands. Adding months to his journey and resulting in a shipwreck.

He washes ashore on the island of Deerhold where a man named Aodhan takes him in and treats him like family. But the Elders of Chen-Strary aren't willing to let him leave them without a struggle. If Tiboth doesn't face his past, the Aodhan and his family will be the ones to pay the price.

The first thing he noticed was the sound; a rythmic rushing and crashing. He was cold. When he shivered it hurt.

Tiboth opened his eyes and saw black rocks. He couldn't remember why he wasn't on the boat. Images of water and fire, of shouting and screaming came to mind, but they had no coherance.

He pushed himself up and sat. The sea was calm now but he saw pieces of blackened timber floating and washing up on the beach.

The cold wind cut through his wet clothes. He looked down and, for a moment, expected to see the blue robes he'd worn all his life. Instead he saw a dirty white shirt stuck to his chest with sea water.

He managed to stand. There was nothing along the beach in either direction. The sky was beginning to darken. He didn't want to be on the beach when night fell. He started to walk. The black rocks were slippery and unforgiving.

In time the rocks became a cliff-face and he clambered up. He had climbed often on Chen-Strary and his muscles were well used to it. The sky continued to fade and he had difficulty finding places to grip. Before the light was gone completely though he reached the top and tumbled onto a grass bank.

For a while, he lay there, catching his breath. It had felt good to focus on climbing, it had allowed him to put everything else aside, but now it came rushing back. He was alone. The people he had trusted were dead and he didn't know where he was.
