    Damn, Rose muttered and stuck her finger in her mouth.

    Every time. That’s why they sent you away. You’d have pricked yourself the minute anyone’s back was turned.

    The fairies had shooed her out of the house early that morning so they could prepare for her party, making her promise to stay away all day. Rose had done everything she could think of to amuse herself—she’d swum in the crystal-clear lake, rambled through the cool, dark forest, searching for mushrooms and listening to the haunting melody of the birds overhead, and finally, she’d wandered through the meadow thick with wildflowers to fill her basket with her favorite roses, the same ghost-white as her hair.
