Advance Distance Learning - Herlin Carelse

    PREFACE

The year was 2015 and university students were protesting over the increasing cost of higher education in my country. Exams were postponed, university buildings burning, students being arrested, and people even marching to parliament!

This book is a direct response to that protest called #FeesMustFall, to lower the cost of education but without diminishing the quality thereof, and to increase the reach of a school or a university to educate more students via distance learning.

    Soli Deo gloria

    Herlin Carelse

    WHY DISTANCE LEARNING?

    It works.

From lawyers, engineers, accountants, teachers, army soldiers, to even doctors, all have been and are educated via distance learning.

It is significantly more economical compared to traditional brick and mortar organizations without sacrificing the quality of education.

And in a country which has limited means of Internet connectivity such as South Africa where more than 60% of families do not have access to the Internet, fewer than 9% access it through a desktop but the majority will access the Internet via a mobile device, M-Learning has a potentially far-reaching application.

    WHY M-LEARNING AND NOT E-LEARNING?

E-Learning implies the presence of a desktop computer needed for learning with a stable and fast Internet connection.

While M-Learning, as presented in this book, does not require your students to have access to expensive desk top computers or constant high-speed internet. But they can still use either their smart phone, tablet, laptop or a PC, and the Internet or cellular data consumption will be significantly less.

    HOW THIS SYSTEM WORKS

My system in this book is not dependent on traditional Correspondence Distance learning, i.e., mainly reading literature.

Instead, this method utilizes the 2 portals which are used on a daily basis to educate students at traditional universities and schools. The eyes and the ears.

A lecturer will first prepare a slide show (for the eyes of a student) as if it would be used in a normal lecture
