    PREFACE

    28 model answers each for past years’ exercises 4, 5 and 6 of Paper 2 of the IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510) make up this book. This collection has been curated from exercises assigned to students during my stint as a teacher and tutor of the course. Admittedly, a few of the emails/letters and articles included in this selection are my own students’ work, duly revised and edited to be clear, concise, complete and correct (the 4 Cs of good writing). Useful tips for writing the summaries, emails and articles have been included.

    As a teacher, I am well aware of the pervasive feeling of fatalism and dread among students when it comes to writing. All too often students face any or a combination of these commonplace challenges: feel overwhelmed by the sheer thought of starting a piece of writing; clueless or confused about using the mechanics of writing; slow and inefficient in retrieving the right word(s) to express an idea; can’t keep track of thoughts while getting them down on paper; perceive that the process of writing is slow and tedious; or realise that the finished product is still sloppy despite their best efforts.

    Students need to deal with their lack of enjoyment of the writing process and poor skill development by employing techniques that are twofold. The first is to develop a better understanding of and appreciation for the purpose of writing, and second, to develop more efficient skills in terms of grammatical, compositional and domain knowledge.

    Assuredly, once they have a combination of this understanding and these skills, they can then freely apply these techniques in a wide range of writing situations. With time and substantial practice (yes indeed: practice, practice, practice!) along with constructive feedback, there is no reason why any student cannot become a confident and accomplished writer.     Teaching Students How to Successfully Summarize

    WRITING A SUMMARY

    Use the following tips:

    Shorten the text in such a way that all required facts are in the summary. Leave out examples, evaluations and interpretations.

    Skim the text. You should know what is the main content of it. Read the headline carefully.

    Read the text again to understand more details. You must have understood the whole text.

    Make notes (use keywords). Underline important words in the text.

    Form sentences with the help of your keywords. These sentences should reflect the main content of the text.

    Connect the sentences using suitable conjunctions and transition words. The first sentence should describe the main content of the text.

    Proofread your summary. Watch out for spelling and grammar mistakes.

    Keep to the word limit of 100 to no more than 120 words.

    1. Paper 22, Oct/Nov 2022

    Write a summary about the advantages of crop rotation for home gardeners.

    There are numerous advantages of crop rotation for home gardeners. For starters, it can be applied to almost any size of garden where the space be used efficiently. Another benefit is that there is always something interesting growing throughout the year, thus improving the quality of the harvest. Gardeners will enlarge their know-how of an assortment of species. Crop rotation also enables a planting schedule to be readily organised years ahead. Further, this technique not only curtails the growth of wild plants and limits the existing number of insects that attack the plants, but also means that fewer chemicals are needed.

    2. Paper 22, May/June 2022

    Write a summary about the cookery skills he learned during the course, AND the advice he gives to future students.

    In addition to acquiring basic practical skills, he also learned to adapt recipes, use the knife properly, prepare chicken and make pasta as well as keep the kitchen tidy and present the food on the plate. The advice he offers to prospective students are to bring food containers, have their breakfast beforehand and to take photos while they are working.

    3. Paper 22, Oct/Nov 2021

    Write a summary about the duties Marco is required to carry out as part of his job.

    Marco has to perform a number of duties as part of his job. To begin with, he keeps the beaches free of rubbish and carries out repairs on the island’s various structures. In addition, he uploads data on the island’s native species, conducts boat tours and gives safety talks. His other responsibilities include updating the information displays in the visitor centre, presenting monthly lectures to visitors, along with completing paperwork on visitor numbers and running inspections on the boat’s engine.

    4. Paper 22, Oct/Nov 2020

    Write a summary about what The Seabin Project hopes to achieve in the future.

    The Seabin Project was set up to achieve a series of objectives. First, it hopes to eliminate pollution in the world’s oceans in addition to making the Seabins available in as many locations as possible. Another goal is to install the Seabins in the open ocean so that a better understanding can be gained about the state of the oceans. Moreover, the project intends to educate people to properly dispose their rubbish, change attitudes towards plastic as well as witness greater emphasis on recycling. Lastly, the scientists behind the project are hoping to attract funds so that they can improve on the quality of the Seabins.
