    Granny JJ lives in Soesdyke, Guyana, South America in a lil' house surrounded by three sides ah bush.

    She’s duh mudda ah ten pickey an have seven grandpickey and five great grandpickney. An she always right. An annoyingly, most time she is. She have a straang faith in God, an’ dun like it when people fast (of course, she jus curious!)

    She love Malta, Pepperpot and most of all – Guyana.

    How to read Creole

    English is the main language of Guyana, South America where Granny JJ lives.

    Granny speaks Creole which is English mixed with words from African, Arawakan, Dutch, and East Indian languages.

    We’ve written her words as they would sound and here’s a few of them with American/British English spelling and explanations alongside:

    ❖  ‘Batties’ = Bottom

    ❖  ‘Buffiana’ = Person with Amerindian, and Black parents

    ❖  ‘Buss a laugh’= Laugh out loud

    ❖  ‘Cigrit’ = Cigarette

    ❖  ‘Coolie’ = East-Indian person

    ❖  ‘De’ = The

    ❖  ‘Death notice’ = Televised or radio announcement of a death

    ❖  ‘Deh’ = There

    ❖  ‘Drainer’ = Manhole/drain cover

    ❖  ‘Nah’ = No or Don’t

    ❖  ‘Pepperpot’ = National dish: mixed meat, veg and spicy gravy

    ❖  ‘Pickney’ = Child

    ❖  ‘Pork-knocker’ - Gold miner

    ❖  ‘Pisa’ = Money

    ❖  ‘She’ and ‘He’ = Her and His

    ❖  ‘Sweet woman’ = Second girlfriend/other woman

    ❖  ‘Teef’ = Thief

    ❖  ‘Tek’ = Take

    ❖  ‘Tuh’ = To

    ❖  ‘Vex’ = Very annoyed

    Many words use an ‘aa’ sound instead of an ‘o’.
