    About the Author

Thank you as always to the wonderful editors who have worked on this and to all my supportive friends.

IT HAD BEEN the worst Christmas season ever for Daisy due to an attack of vestibular neuritis, also known as labyrinthitis, that left her in bed with her head spinning every time she moved. She’d slept a lot of it away due to her medication, but whenever she had to move, like to go to the bathroom, she felt violently ill and was often sick.

It had lasted a week, and she’d thought it was never going to end, that she’d miss out on the pack gathering for Boxing Day. It was held in the New Forest where she lived, so she didn’t have to travel far, but some packs would. It would be mainly wolf packs like hers, but sometimes other rare shifters came too.

But now, still feeling a little off, Daisy got ready to head to the meeting place, a large manor owned by several pack members. She hadn’t had time to cook anything fancy like she usually did. She’d raided her freezer for cookie dough she had frozen in the past and made that, so at least she wouldn’t turn up empty handed. Her grandmother would be ashamed if she did. Grandma Rosa had fled the chilly English December for a cruise in the Caribbean. The heat, she said, would help her arthritis.

Rosa had invited Daisy to go, but the holidays were always hard for Daisy, having lost her parents young to hunters who didn’t care to check if they’d taken a human life. It was never easy being the child of murdered parents, but that loss during the holidays always seemed keener.

It was probably best that she didn’t go, because being on a boat with labyrinthitis would have been awful. With the boat always moving, she’d have to fight sea sickness on top of her condition, and that would have been hell.

But she’d been alone long enough that she wanted the company of her pack. They’d known not to bother her when she was sick.
