About this ebook
Major:
When Daphne left, I thought I'd never see her again.
She made the right decision. She left. She got out.
Somewhere, her life took a sour turn, and now she's out hunting down her deadbeat baby daddy.
That was how she ended up back in my town.
In my arms.
And I'll be damned if I ever let her go again.
Daphne:
I didn't leave because of Major, but he was why I never went back home.
I knew if I ever saw him again, I'd never leave.
It would just be too painful. For both of us.
But, d*mn it, I had to get my baby's deadbeat dad to pay up. All I had to do was avoid Major for a few days.
Of course it's wasn't that simple.

“I’ve got another life,” Daphne told him. “I can’t just drop everything for you. Regardless of what I might want.”
Major pulled away and looked her in the eyes. “I know that. But at least let me help you, while you’re right in front of me.”
“I can’t ask you to do that. When I’m done here, I’m gone.” Somehow it wouldn’t be fair for him. The transaction wouldn’t be equal. She would be taking, and she wouldn’t be giving anything back. That seemed wrong, somehow, even though it was how every relationship she’d ever had ended, in the end. One gave, and the other took. She’d already taken enough from Major.
“Let me do this for you, Daphne. Don’t be so stubborn.” He kissed her. She put a hand on his chest.
“This is my mess, and I’m not afraid to clean it up myself.”
“Are you telling me you won’t let me help you?” His kiss was accompanied by a hand on her chest this time. He pulled away and looked into her eyes when he didn’t hear an answer.
“I’m not,” she said finally.
“Then let me help.”
“God d*mn it, Major. This isn’t fair.”
“What’s not fair?”
“You being so good to me.” It was her turn to bury her head. “F*ck you.”
“You want to?” He grinned at her.

His shirt was already off, and he was already kissing her throat. Daphne leaned into Major’s lips. The scratching of his stubble was just enough to set her on edge, and his hands resting on her hips were enough to sharpen that edge to a razor’s point. She was breathing ragged before she’d even managed to get her top off.
Are you sure you’re comfortable with this?
His voice was low, low enough that she almost thought she could hear the sound of cleaning up downstairs. Daphne grabbed a fist-full of Major’s hair and pulled him back to her throat. He started to dip lower, biting a line of soft nibbles down her collarbone.
You need to learn not to ask stupid questions, Major.
It’s one of my most endearing qualities,
he said. His hands had found the buttons of Daphne’s blouse and he was pulling them, one by one, apart. His fingers traced a burning line up her body towards her breasts, and he was taking his sweet time about it. She sucked in a breath and tried to regain control of herself, knowing full well that it was a hopeless effort.
Right now the endearing quality I’m looking for is a condom.
Her breaths came ragged and shallow, and her hands tried to work the waist of her trousers. He leaned over to the bedside stand and pulled open a drawer, showing a box that ought to have held a pack of playing cards.
I can do that.
The rattle from the box told her that he wasn’t about to play go fish. He managed the last button as she finally got her pants to slide down off her hips. She laid back on the bed and pulled him on top of her.
Then stop talking and fuck me, you big idiot.
He smiled a vicious grin and pulled on a nipple before engulfing the one opposite in his hot mouth. He slid his fingers under the waist of her panties, past her untrimmed hair, and rubbed a tight circle around her clit.
"Don’t get too far ahead of me, now," he said. Then he bit down, and in time with her gasp he pressed a thick finger inside her. It felt bigger than she’d realized it would. Her teeth clamped down on her lower lip and held on tight, hoping to hold in the beginning of a moan that would give away exactly what the two of them were doing upstairs.
He started moving his hand, tracing her clit with his thumb as his finger searched for just the right spot inside her. The orgasm that was already starting to build up inside her forced her teeth open, and in spite of herself she let out a whimper. God, it’s been too long.
Fuck, you’re tight,
Major said. He added a second finger. Her body clamped down on those fingers like they were the only things keeping her going, and at that moment she wasn’t sure how inaccurate that was.
Oh, God, Major. Right there.
The words tumbled out of her. She sounded as vulnerable as she felt, but in that moment she didn’t care. Her body convulsed, every nerve screaming in pleasure as her muscles started to tense in unison.

Chapter One ♥
*
The bar was noisy to start. Daphne pushed past a uniformed police officer, who she could only assume wasn’t there for fun. After all, whatever he was doing, if he didn’t stop her, then he was just in the way of the conversation she needed to have. Her eyes never left the man at the bar, leaning on one elbow and grinning hard at a pair of men that Daphne didn’t recognize.
Hey,
she snarled, grabbing his shoulder and pulling him to face her. You’ve been avoiding me.
And I’m going to keep avoiding you,
Gabriel answered curtly, turning back to his companions.
If you’re not signing a child support check in two seconds, I’m not even going to bother with the police any more. That’s obviously not getting through to you.
Daphne was beginning to shout, and even with the cacophony of the room, she could see people starting to turn to watch her. I’ll just clobber you right here and now.
You hear that? She’s going to hit me. That sounded like a threat, didn’t it? Sound like a threat to you?
Sounded like a threat to me,
one of the men offered. He wasn’t going to do anything about it, though, apparently content to let his new friend get as threatened as he liked.
Are you sure that you should really be threatening me?
Gabriel’s voice was low, a contrast to Daphne’s, and it left no doubt about the fact that he was threatening her right back. After all, it could look very bad for you in a custody hearing, if you were threatening to commit acts of violence. The courts typically don’t hold a very positive view of that sort of thing.
If you don’t start taking your daughter seriously, then you’re not going to make it to a custody hearing, you son of a bitch.
Now, lady, I’ve indulged your whims plenty already. I don’t need to keep it up one moment longer.
He met her gaze, his smile never faltering. Daphne bristled at being called ‘lady’ like she was some stranger, but she tried not to show it. You need to get out of here, before I have someone remove you. You’re coming off like a crazy person, and I’m not going to let you threaten me. You’ve been harassing me for months now, and you’re lucky that I’m such a nice guy, or I’d have gotten a restraining order a whole lot sooner.
"Yeah, you’re a real charmer. I’m sure that the missed child support payments don’t have anything to do with your desire to avoid a courtroom with me in it, right? Because you’re such a nice fucking guy." Daphne’s fists balled up at her sides, and her arms tensed in preparation for using one of those fists to flatten his nose.
Bartender—can you get someone to get rid of this woman?
Gabriel’s hand went up to signal something, and for an instant, Daphne seriously considered letting fly. She kept her hands by her sides only by reminding herself that losing her temper was only going to make things worse for her.
A second specter of Daphne’s past spoke from behind her: Is there a problem here? Daphne, who is this guy?
Major? What are you doing here?
She spun and looked up at him. He looked good, as good as she remembered.
There was a long time that Daphne had told herself that she was looking back on Major with rose-colored lenses. But if anything, she’d underestimated him. He regarded her for only a moment before his eyes fixed behind her.
I think I’m the one who should be asking that. You left, but I’ve been here all this time.
The words stung.
He was more right than he realized, and it hurt to think about it. She’d never wanted to stay here, and she’d never kept it a secret. Everyone in a small town only ever talks about leaving, and she wasn’t going to let it stay talk. That didn’t mean that it was easy leaving some
