Marty continued to turn the dial this way, that way, his face alert, listening intently through the stethoscope as the tumblers of the safe clicked.

Clack… There!

Five, he said.

That it? Tom asked hopefully.

Should be, replied Marty, and exhaled at length. Should be. Standard five-digit combination for this model.

Or so the mate who had loaned him the safe-cracking gear had told him. He didn't have a clue beyond what he'd been told. But he wasn't going to tell Tom that! He put one gloved hand on the handle to the door of the safe, and turned. It gave. He pulled. The safe opened!

Piece of piss! he said with a lordly air, and grinned at his mate.

Nice one! acknowledged Tom, then whistled as he caught sight of the safe's contents — row upon row of jewellery cases, neatly stacked.

Christ! This bitch have enough earrings, d'you think?

You know these slags, no such word as enough in their book.

Tell me about it. ‘Buy me this, buy me that’, Tom mimicked in a high-pitched voice. If I didn't give my old lady a good slap from time to time, to quieten her down like, I'd never hear the end of it!

Tell me about it! said Marty. "Way I see it, jewels and pearls and such are fuck-all use to a bird on her back with her legs spread — and that's what they're for, innit?"

Too right mate! Anyway, let's get a move on.

Gingerly, he began to ease each case out in turn, handing each one to Marty who stacked them neatly on the floor.

When they were done, they divvied up their load and headed on down the stairs. It had taken a while to break that combination, but now they were home free, as good as, with the best haul of their criminal careers!
