    Wingspan

    A Dragon Tales short story

    by Eileen Mueller

For all my special short people – little packages hold valuable gifts.

Especially for Mandi Ellsworth, who is not short at all, but very valuable.

    Chapter One – Deep Cut

Hey, you girls! Bet you can’t jump this one! Buzz taunts. He leaps the chasm, leaving me and Thea behind.

I stare over the edge. The chasm isn’t that wide, but it is deep. What if I fall again? Fear churns in my second stomach.

Don’t listen to him, says Thea. You’ll be fine.

Buzz lands with perfect form, joining our classmates on the far side. All of them have jumped the gap without a problem. But they’re not me.

Thea nudges me with her wingtip. You can do it, she says.

It’s alright for you, your wings are bigger.

But you’re lighter, Thea says. You’ll make it, even with shorter wings. We’ll just take a decent run up.

    I gulp. Good idea.

Come on, Thea, Shorty, calls Examiner Longflight, stretching a kink out of his tail. Your turn.

We skitter backwards, our talons scratching the rock. I clench mine so hard that I break off chips of stone. We run towards the chasm, leaping and spreading our wings.

My stomachs tense as we glide over the deep black gap.

Thea lands safely, yards past the far lip of the ravine.

My talons catch the edge, sending a rock clattering down the steep walls. I’ve made it – just. A shudder of relief runs through me. I furl my wings against my side and casually stroll over to join the class.

Buzz is crowing, "Did you see how I cleared that gap? By at least ten yards. Unlike some shorter attempts."

    The other dragonlings snigger.

I want to tuck my head under my wing
