The phone was ringing on her nightstand. The vibrations from the little cow print-covered phone rattled her jewellery, causing one of her rings to fall off the table and drop to the carpeted floor below.
Josie groaned and rolled over, blindly reaching for the phone. Her hand landed on the phone’s touch screen, killing the call. She opened her eyes blearily when she realised that the phone was no longer ringing.
Ah, crap.
She said as she came fully awake. She sat up in bed, her hair dishevelled around her face and the little bags under her eyes prominent in her state of ‘just woken up’
She didn’t recognise the number. Her thumb swiped across the ‘call back’ icon and she put the phone to her ear, using her free hand to wipe away the fine crusts of sleep from the corners of her eyes as her mind came to full wakefulness.
Hi,
She said when the other end of the call was answered.
"Hello, is this Dr Josie Wilson?" the voice on the other end asked.
Yes, speaking.
Josie replied.
"Josie, this is Chance St. Claire from the ARCDA."
The ARCDA?
Josie asked.
"The Australian Rodeo and Camp Draft Association. We have an opening for a vet come up, our last one sadly passed away on the weekend and we need the position filled as soon as possible. We’ve heard great things about you, and we’d love to offer you a place as our on-tour vet." Josie came to full wakefulness in an instant.
Absolutely!
she said. That would be fantastic!
Her heart beat fast in her chest, this was a dream come true. She’d just lost her last job as a Veterinarian when the clinic she was working for went belly up after the primary vet was sued for animal cruelty and unsafe practices. Josie had been worried that it would impact on her future career, though she’d had no part in the criminal activities hat Dr Foster had conducted. It had made Josie sick to think that she looked up to him as a mentor.
So it was a fantastic feeling when she ended the call and flopped back into her bed. She heard the sound of the old-style kettle whistling on her sister’s stove. Josie had actually been crashing at her sister’s place since she’d lost her job. Josie got up and dressed in her jeans and shirt that she had worn the day before.
Morning!
Cassie said as she poured the coffee. Wow, you look like shit.
She said as she handed her sister a cup of coffee.
Josie took the cup in both hands and sipped the bitter brew. Ugh, no sugar?
she said with a grimace.
That stuff is bad for you.
Her sister said
