FIRE ASSURANCE

WHEN I DESCENDED the iron spiral stairs from my bedroom Thursday morning, my fellow lodger, Fraser, had already eaten. Seated in his armchair, he had joined his daily battle with legal documents. They were upon his lap desk, strewn across the small table beside his chair, and on the floor, partly covering his crutches. His lame leg, adorned by more documents, rested upon the ottoman.

Fraser himself looked out-of-place amidst the litter. The study of law suited him ill. His blonde hair and whiskers were close-trimmed; his complexion was deeply tanned, both marks of recent military service.

Kippers this morning, old chum, he said. A messenger from Scotland Yard took your packet and left a voucher. He picked up two papers, put them down, and rummaged in the pile on his knee.
