About this ebook

Escape is possible, survival is another story…

Renegades of Orion is a tale of action-packed excitement, betrayal, and survival, set in a shared universe with dozens of worlds colonized by humans and alien civilizations. The story is an introduction to the struggles of people and conflicting ideologies that propel decades of strife and reconciliation throughout human held space, the vast neutral territory surrounding the impenetrable galactic core, and the alien civilizations who also seek to master the galaxy that humans alone call the Milky Way.

Meet Vicky Legrande, shuttle pilot and covert resistance fighter from the human colony of Orion Prime.  Orion Prime represented a shining achievement in human colonization efforts with cooperation between three Earthling factions. Unfortunately, the promise of new territory and resources also led to corruption, greed, and domination of the colony worlds by all of the Earthling factions.

Learn about generations of Earthling oppression on Orion Prime and throughout human held space.  Discover how that tyranny led to the rebel mission to steal the United States of North America's newest warship, the Artemis.  Find out if her team of revolutionaries succeeds, or if the dreaded Earthlings ruin their carefully crafted plan.  The rebellion against Earth, violent smuggling rings and wildly different ideas of right and wrong all come into play in this first installment in the Renegade Galaxy series!

Renegades of Orion - Steve Anderson

    For Brenda – My Huntress.

Vicky was running out of time.  A bead of sweat rolled down her forehead as she waited again for Dimarcos to get her program running.  Once she saw the command functions unlocked on her console, she frantically tried to bring the systems she needed online.  She watched the other systems the team was supposed to be bringing online with her.  Oh Gods, what was the hold up in engineering?"

Vicky looked at her wrist comm and saw the timer was almost at the nine minute mark.  They had to get the engines up before nine minutes thirty seconds.  She had to trust Paolo and his half of the team to get their systems running while she focused on the bridge.  The engine went green at the last moment, but then flashed red.  Her console registered a catastrophic fusion reaction.  The coolant system again.  They were all dead.

From his viewpoint above the plywood model of their target, the NAS Artemis, Commander Lewis Yelled, Reset!  We do it again, from the airlock!  Diaz and his commandos are up first!  Legrande, get your command team together!  Move it!  We reset the timer to ten minutes!

Vicky faintly heard Peter, one of the twins, cursing in Italian from clear back in the simulated engine room.  She knew the feeling, but they had to get all the details down on these practice runs.  She looked up to the fluorescent lights hanging from the rafters a story above them in frustration.  She and her bridge team wearily climbed down the roughhewn wooden ladder to the plywood lined passageway without a ceiling that led to the fake airlock.

Diaz and his commandos were already there in their body armor and carrying networked training rifles.  He shrugged at her as she passed him, even though this reset wasn’t his fault.  Her team, especially the twins, needed to cut more time off their start up routines.

They walked through the circular wooden ‘airlock’, lined up behind the commandos and waited for Paolo, the twins and their final addition, Daiyu from the Chinese province to join them.  She was supposed to be good enough to help Paolo get under nine minutes thirty seconds.  So far they hadn’t used her talents very well.

Soon enough the giant engineer and his lanky cousins came through the airlock too, with delicate looking Daiyu right behind them.  The three Venturi family spacers were stubborn about adding a new team member, but she had to push them anyway if they were going to succeed.  With the engineering team here, they could reset now.  The digital timer readout by the fake airlock rolled back to ten minutes.

She said to her team, Don’t tense up, we were only a few seconds short that time.  We made it in under ten minutes three days in row now.  Trust in each other and we’ll shave some more time off.  Let Daiyu help, that’s why she’s here.  Remember, nine minutes thirty seconds is the time to beat.

From his nest of monitors and simulators, Commander Lewis yelled down to them, "I at least expected you to find a new way to die.  Not getting the coolant system online before engine ignition seems to be your favorite.  Prove me wrong.  We only have a few
