Something fascinating is happening! A female loggerhead sea turtle is emerging from the dark blue shadow of the deep.
She had traveled thousands of miles, from the coastal reefs of Argentina, to the Caribbean Sea. Navigating to the powdery white sand beach where she was born some 40 years ago.
The journey for the loggerhead is long & treacherous, danger lurks in every corner of the deep, but her natural instinct pushes her forward. Her sanctuary, & one-time ago her nursery, draws closer.
As the gentle sunlight of the evening penetrates through the ocean’s waves, the traveling loggerhead aggregates with other migrating loggerhead sea turtles; all of them on the same journey to produce their offspring.
An atmosphere of happiness illuminates among the exhausted travelers as they approach the brilliant colors, & the artistic fish schools, & also the huge elkhorn corals- a marine garden paradise taming with life welcomes the loggerheads!
The loggerheads were no foreigners to this area, their arrival was well expected. The sea turtles peacefully & slowly swam passed the silky sharks-the inspectors that guarded the gates of the magnificent Sea Island coral reef.
Sea Island is a large & beautiful coral reef, located on the north-western point of Little Inagua Island in the Bahamas. Little Inagua Island however, is located on the north-northeast point of Great Inagua Island. Long ago, the native Lucayan Indians, who inhabited Little Inagua at the time, called the majestic marine sanctuary Taguana Cay
. But as years passed, & the Lucayans died out, the English language followed the new settlers of the Bahamas, thus Taguana Cay
became Sea Island.
Sea Island was wealthy with diverse marine life, the large coral reef sustained Lucayan Indian families for many years with a healthy supply of fish. Fortunately, the native Indians never took the coral reef for granted, & they viewed it as a gift from God, so they took good care of the reef & protected it.
As we return to the loggerhead sea turtles’ journey, the white powdery sand beaches of Little Inagua Island was in view, but danger awaits the travelers. The Sea Island coral reef, although immense & beautiful, also had its share of fierce predators. A massive tiger lurks in the blue shades of the sea, gliding among the tube sponges and the large fan corals, swimming slowly & cautiously, undetected by the weary loggerheads.
This tiger was a dangerous & clever hunter, just like a land tiger, but this was a tiger shark & sea turtles were on his menu. Tiger sharks were the only sharks that hunted the loggerheads, with a combination of a powerful biting force, & saw-like teeth, it was easy for
