    About This Guidebook

I’ve read lots of materials over the years on how to make money with your music, some good and some bad. One thing I’ve found missing from all the materials I’ve read was how to properly prepare, copyright, and register your music before you can license it and start making money. There’s this thing called Intellectual Property Rights. The first step in making money with your music is to properly copyright and register it. You can’t make money with music you don’t own. In most cases you will need to prove ownership of your music through documentation and registration. It is important that you master the basics of the business of music to avoid setbacks and disappointments when trying to license your music to make money.

This Guidebook is written for recording artist, music producers and song writers. This book will help guide you through important steps in preparing your music for licensing, as well as ways to generate revenue streams from other sources.

The business of music has changed dramatically over past years. Not only has new technology given you the ability to record a quality album at home, access to manufacturing, distribution, marketing and promotion is now within your reach as well, which creates greater opportunities for making money with your music.

Music downloading and streaming has changed the face of music sales and want a recording artist, song writer or music producer can except to earn from their music. Changing technology has created a vast array of media outlets you can use to make money with your music. Changing technology has also enabled you to create huge followings and fan bases; using your music to generate fans and followers is a great way to make money. This Guidebook will cover some of the basic techniques used to generate revenue streams from your music sales, fan base and followers.

I call this a Guidebook because my intent is to focus on the meat and potatoes of what you need to know. I’m not going to give you long drawn out explanations or terminology you don’t understand. The purpose of this Guidebook is to keep it simple and to the point. Nobody wants to read a 300 page book full of stuff they won’t remember, understand or need to know. My goal is to provide you with the tools you need, in the shortest possible format. Quick and easy, giving you the exact tools you need to achieve your specific goals.

No book will teach you all you need to know about the music industry, but if you learn some of the basics you will be on your way to creating a successful and profitable career.

    The Business of Music

The business of music is probably one to the most overlooked part of a recording artist, song writer or music producer’s career. I’ve found that experienced industry professionals sometimes don’t have a clue about the business of music. Time and time again I am approached by recording artist, song writers and music producers, who are looking for a way to get exposure, build a fan base and start making money with their music.

I must admit that some to the demos I listened to were very good. The production quality met today’s industry standards, art work was unique and eye catching. The overall product looked good on the surface. After digging a little deeper, I found the music was not registered nor was it copyrighted. To make matters worse, the artist didn’t have written agreements with the producers of the music.

With that said, there was nothing I could do with their music and no way to make money with it; too many times artist present music that is not properly registered or cleared. Publishers, music supervisors, radio stations, Youtube, and other potential sources of revenue streams will not touch your music unless it is properly cleared and registered. So, before you can start making money with your music you must first establish a good business foundation with your music. Not only will a good business foundation make your music marketable, it protects you and your rights.

In this chapter we will cover 2 key areas you need to focus on before you can properly register, market, and license your music.

    •Budget

    •Contracts

    Budget

On the surface a budget may sound like a simple and straight forward concept, but it’s not. There are many details and unavoidable expenses when launching a music project. The worst is to spend the bulk of you funds on one item and end up with nothing left to cover the list of other things you will need to give your project its best chance for success.

Too many projects have fizzled out because a budget was not established to ensure key areas of the project would be covered. Not only will you have to pay for recording and recording related expenses, you have to pay for marketing and promotions as well. Let’s consider some of the expenses you will need to incorporate into your budget.

When establishing your budget, consider the following:

    •Recording/Studio Time

    •Photos Shoot

    •Video Production
