CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION TO ENLIGHTENMENT

1Just as a white summer cloud, harmonious with heaven and earth, floats freely in blue sky from horizon to horizon, following the breath of the atmosphere… In the same way the pilgrim abandons himself to the breath of the greater life that… leads him beyond the farthest horizons to an aim which is already present within him though yet hidden from his sight.

Back in the year 2013, there lived a sleepy little village called Trimlock. Nestled in the valleys of the Snowdonia peaks, hidden amongst the depths of the beautiful Welsh green fields; wound with narrow country lanes flagged by old stone walls; sheep peering over whenever a movement passed them by. The Sheepdog Bela glanced up and jumped over the wall, approaching Sam the postman with joy and love; sniffing at his trouser legs. Although every morning the postman’s trip was the same, and Bela knew that he would turn up, still the ritual continued day after day, month after month, year after year.

Good morning Bela, how are you today? Are you tending your sheep this morning, and how many sheep do you have today?

Happy to be asked that question, even after so many times, Bela replied, Oh only the ten today Sam, the other five are back at the barn. They are delivering their newborn lambs.

Ah, said Sam. There will be some new little ones on the way soon. Super! And you, when are your new little ones due?

Oh, not for another two months. I will be happy when I can stop and have a break and have my puppies in peace. Then my Master will give me a holiday and my sister Sherpa can take over my job for a while. She is ready and eager to step into my shoes. She has no puppies of her own, no family, so she is unwanted, unloved and very alone.

Sam knew how Bela’s sister felt. He had been very lonely and unloved most of his life, and he had spent nearly all of his existence searching for the reasons why. He had a belief within him, which stated that if he sustained a pure life, if he was compassionate, caring and empathic toward all living beings and nature; if he worked really hard, then the hard work would pay off. God would reward him and would deliver him the gifts of the divine; give him the happiness and love that he deserved.

But after many years of hoping, and living a pure and compassionate life, believing that this was the theory to life’s secret, nothing good ever happened. No love, no happiness, and no security. No one to come home to and share his life with, and still lonely after all these years… The postman then understood something.

"I have been the purest, most hard working and most compassionate person I could be toward humans, animals, nature and the environment. I have never strayed into corruption and have always seen the best in people. I have never been in trouble with the law and have always treated every individual with respect, love and understanding. I have lived a pure life, full of all these attributes. Why is God not listening to me? Why is he not giving me the gifts that I so desperately want? Why is God not giving me love? Why is he not listening?" Sam was so desperate; his energy of hope had reached its end. The fear of slipping even deeper into an unknown downward spiral prompted him to set out and explore whether God really did exist in the way that he really thought. In other words, he set out to discover if the mental picture of this being that looks down on earth—on all humans, the Great Divine, the Master over all of us… all beings and the earth—was true

Who really is this God? And so the life’s search began. The postman became obsessed with finding the answer to this. He studied book after book. All manner of books,
