FOREWORD
This new book by Dr. Anita Gadhia-Smith is a true teaching tool on relationships. It covers the complex element of the human experience from every angle and opens our eyes to issues we have never even considered. It is written in a very positive and fluid style, which makes one eager to move from one chapter to the next, realizing that one can learn from every step of the book.
Dr. Anita is an experienced relationship therapist, and this is shown by her extraordinary insight on how to face and deal with inter-personal problems. She offers advice to redirect relationships that have gone wrong, and she gives us valuable guidelines for making good relationships even better. She delves deep into our souls and helps us realize that even if something has gone wrong in a relationship, one can reroute it to find great comfort and happiness.
This book makes you aware that you have to be actively involved in making a meaningful life with your partner, and that it is up to you to create a loving and positive environment. Taking on this challenge personally, every day, will lead to a successful life together.
Dr. Anita has done it again. This is a ‘good read’ with an incredible amount of clinical and practical advice for both the general public and her professional mental health colleagues. She demonstrates why she is such a good therapist. We all will learn a great deal from this book.

INTRODUCTION
After 15 years of marriage and 51 years of life, I knew it was time to write this book. I married at the age of 36, have weathered many storms in my own marriage and have learned a tremendous amount that I want to share. I am a psychotherapist who specializes in relationship issues, as well as addiction issues, and have been working with individuals, couples, and families in my practice for fifteen years. I have extensive clinical training as well as first-hand experience in working with a vast array of relationship issues.
My own marriage was extremely difficult in the beginning. Actually, that is an understatement. It was a nightmare. The amount, intensity, and frequency of unmanageable conflict were beyond my comprehension when I decided to marry. I had no idea what I was doing, and I am eternally grateful to my family, therapist, and friends who got me through those rough times. I had no clue that I was not good relationship material at the time of my marriage. I was self-centered, immature, and severely lacking in relationship skills. I have learned that the best way to learn how to do something is to actually do it. For me, this meant staying in a relationship long enough to learn how to have a good one.
After exhausting myself by blaming my husband for several years and getting nowhere, I finally began to look at myself. This was the missing piece that unlocked the door to true progress and growth. I learned that there was much that I could not readily see about myself that I later came to understand after persevering in a sustained effort to grow. I learned about the meaning of love and how to put it into action.
In my practice as a psychotherapist, I see many people give up on their relationships too quickly. This, in turn, affects their other relationships, their children, and society as a whole. We have become a disposable culture, ready to throw out what we have all too quickly in the hopes of finding something better. We are often lazy and entitled when it comes to getting what we want, when we want it, the way we want it.
Many people want the other person to change but are slow to recognize their own shortcomings. This is very difficult to do on your own, but with help, can become a life-transforming practice. I was definitely in this category. I knew how to leave, but I did not know how to stay. I had to learn how to stay, as well as how to enjoy it!
