    ACT ONE, SCENE ONE

    THE STAGE IS DARK EXCEPT

    FOR A SPOTLIGHT DOWNSTAGE RIGHT.

A ROW OF BARS HANGS IN FRONT OF

    OF THE COT.

Vinnie lies in his cot in a prison cell, reading a Valentine’s card with little hearts on it. He is alone. He smiles as he reads the card.

    VINNIE

    (Talks to the card.)

One day, baby cakes, me and you are gonna get hitched. Right after all this is over. We’ll buy a house and you can cook me dinner every night, just like we did when we were kids. Laura, you’re the best childhood memory I have, and I’d do anything for you, kid. You know that.

We hear FOOTSTEPS to his cell.

    Frank enters the cell.

The LIGHTS go up on that part

of the stage as Frank arrives.

    FRANK

    Vince.

    VINNIE

    (Vinnie springs to his feet.)

    I’m counting the days, boss.

    FRANK

    I’m counting your paycheck.

    VINNIE

    I forgot about that.

    FRANK

You would. Eighteen months, twenty-four hours a day, that’s some hunk of change. You’ll be able to buy your mom’s place.

    VINNIE

I hope this is worth it.

    FRANK

We’re going to take down a whole crime family. You know what that means? It means that honest people can start a business without having to be scared into paying through the nose to some mob guy they’ve never met.
