    New Hell - Ellynor Pfirsch

    A NEW LIFE

A new town, a new state, a new life, yeah right, all this is going to turn out to be is a new hell.

My Mom couldn’t handle the life we had in Montana, so she moved my brother and me out here, to where ever we are, there were no signs, all I know is there is like three feet between my house and the neighbors on each side, I’m so not used to this. The new house is a two-story; three bed room, two baths that my Mom loves.

You walk in the door and there are stairs, to the right there is an over sized door frame, with French doors, that leads to the dining room. Then if you walk through that to the left was a normal sized door frame, with no door on it, which leads to the kitchen, then the laundry slash mud room, and the back door.

    On the other

hand if you go left at the door there is another over sized door frame, with no door, that leads to the living room. The house is fully furnished accepted the bed rooms, Mom thought it would be easier to leave my two older sisters if we just took our rooms and only our rooms. Mom takes the room down stairs, on the main level, so my brother Pete and I get to choose from the two bed rooms up stairs. I take the one on the right because it looks bigger.

It doesn’t take long for the movers to bring all my boxes in, from out of the truck that they followed us in. I guess that says a lot about my worldly positions. As I start to unpack enough to get me through the night I notice three things, one my room was vary oddly shaped which could be a good thing. Two there are no curtains on any of the windows in my room, and thirdly I can see straight into the window across from mine Perfect. From what I can see it’s a bedroom and probably a boy’s room I don’t want to look long. I get a small pain in my side and a feeling of emptiness, nothing new. I go down stairs to see if we had anything to eat.

Mom is unpacking the cooler from the car, so I grab a snack size bag of chips, a coke, and granola bar, just as I turn to go back upstairs, she looks around the corner from the mud room, I ordered pizza, it should be here any minute.

So I put the chips and pop back call me down when it gets here, I say turning to head through the dining room. As I reach the stairs the doorbell rang, I turn and look through the glass of the front door to see the pizza guy, at least they look the same here as they do at home, where’s the check I yell from the base of the steps.

On the table she yells from the kitchen. I go back to the dining room switch the granola bar for the check, and walk back to the door.

I open it, he is young, around my age, seventeen, and he smiles Hello, pepperoni, Hawaiian

I shrug I don’t know what she ordered

It wasn’t a question so he just smiles $29.50. I hand him the check, he hands me the pizzas.

He was still smiling so I say Thank you, have a nice night. He nods, takes a deep breath, I know that look, I start to close the door, he slowly turns and walks away I finish shutting the door when he gets off the steps, I turn and yell up the stairs to Pete to get down here and take them to the table. We sit around the table tonight, something we haven’t done in a while.

So how do you two like the house? Mom’s pathetic attempt to start a conversation, this was a question I had to answer

It’s a house I said in my teenager tone, which she has been getting a lot lately.

I like it Mom! Pete is way too enthusiastic, just trying to suck up like all ways.

Polly you aren’t giving this a chance she said disappointingly

Well you didn’t give me a chance to get over the accident, before moving me from people that under stood and didn’t judge when I had a ‘fit I can’t really hold back the anger right now my buttons are easily pushed lately. I get up and leave before she could say anything. I go straight to my room, there is still a lot that I need to unpack before I go to bad, but I do not feel like it so I sit on my bed with a box in front of me observing my room.

I realize, my room looks like an afterthought, like it wasn’t a part of the original plans. You walk in to my door and you can see out the first window, which is the side of the other house. To the right is a wall full of built in shelves and in the middle a sliding door for the closet. To the left there is a large rectangle sticking out of the wall then a smaller one in the corner, making it look like steps, that’s where the shower is, which is where my bed is, I really hope I won’t be able to hear Pete singing in the shower.

On the far wall there is a window almost in the middle of the wall. Sitting on my bed you can see out the third window and in to the window for the room across from mine, in the other house. I take more time to see what who lives in it, and it is definitely a boy, or a girl that likes some of the same stuff as me.

When you look into his room you can see a full sized bed facing the window and a desk facing the back wall that’s about all I can see some small things here and there nothing weird or that sticks out.

I finally decide to start unpacking, but first I need to move my bed in to place fully, so I push the bed completely in to the corner. I forgot how heavy a queen sized bed and box spring is, and on top of that I have to get it angled just right against the rectangle perturbing from the wall. Then grab my night stand put next to my bed, it just touched the window seal. I put my desk, filing cabinet, and dresser in between the two windows, there was three inches between them. I start opening boxes hoping they were the right ones.

The first one I open has my blankets and pillows in it, I’m off to a great start, slid it to the side. The second one has stuff that I don’t need right now so tomorrow. Finally the fifth box I open has clothes in it but not the right ones, I put it in front of my dresser and open another one, thank goodness pajamas. I take out a pair of boxers and a tank top change and put the rest of the box in front of my dresser.

I grab the first box I opened and make my bed, probably the only time it will ever be made. I go to my night stand and grab my alarm clock out of it plug it in, reset it, then I reach in to the cubby grad my fan and plug that in. I look at my clock and it is 9:15 pm. I’m not that tired so I start to put my clothes away, get done with that and move on to putting my nick-knacks away. I get most of the boxes I opened earlier emptied when I look at the clock it’s 11:30 pm, time to call it a day. I turn off the light, crawl in to bed, stubbing my toe on the way, turn on my fan and try to go to sleep.

I look at the clock once more to see how long I’ve been laying there its two in the morning. I look around its dark but not that dark, the wind is blowing which makes the house creek. I glace out the window as I turn over, I can see a lump in the bed. I wonder how long he has been in there and if he looked over here.

The morning seems to never come, but yet it seems to get here too quickly. I roll out of bed, go over to the mirror that I hung last night on my dresser take my hair out of the pony tail it is in, brush it and put it in a new one. I grab jeans and a T- shirt and got dressed, then put on my shoes and go down stairs Mom and Pete are already eating.

Mom has made me a plate already it consists of bacon, and hash browns, it is quiet till I’m going in to town to get some stuff for the house she says it swiftly do either of you want to come?

Sure it’s hesitant but I need curtains.

Pete on the other hand jumps up I’ll get my wallet and he is off, I see nothing but a blur. I help clear the table, when we get done Pete is all ready to go.

We got to Wail-Mart, the one place that no matter where you go it’s always there, and start out in the produce and slowly make our way to the home improvement department, were I get three sets of dark blue curtains and three curtain rods. When we get back from town the movers are back, they have more boxes.

Ya, more to unpack and I thought I was almost done I roll my eyes. Most of it was for the living room, and kitchen stuff.

We have lunch in town so we spend most of the time at home unpacking; Pete and I do the living room while Mom does the kitchen. By the time dinner rolls around Mom already had the table set and it is like we have been living here for years, at least for her. At dinner Mom surprises us with cell phones, she had bought them when we were looking at movies, they are just those prepay ones I guess she is planning ahead for groundings.

Sense we are living in a bigger town I want to be able to reach you at any time

Well I could do without the speech of clinginess but thanks she gives me a look I shrug, no use lying.

After dinner Pete stays down stairs to help clean up and I go up to call PJ, my best friend, I can’t say her real name but it begins with a P and ends with a J so I call her PJ, well we all do, the phone rings three time and finally, Hello it is PJ’s voice.

Hay its Polly I say eagerly

Hay, who’s phone are you on I don’t recognize the number

Mine my Mom just bought it for me to day it may have only been a couple days but I miss her so much.

Great now we can talk whenever, when does school start for you

Wednesday I said disappointed and for you

Last week, I already have a ton of homework; it was never this hard before

Yeah, well, at least you know people and where your classes are I complain so, how is it going with Zack, has he asked you out again yet

Yeah, we are going out on Friday after school

What are you guys going to be doing?

    Dinner and a movie

    Classic

I know she said a little disappointed I have to go dinner time, bye

Okay, save this number I add before she hangs up.

It’s only 8:00 pm so start unpacking again. By the time 10 rolls around I only have three unopened boxes left I get ready for bed dreading tomorrow. I do not get much sleep tonight either. I get up and drag myself in to the bathroom it is a nice sized bath room. I open the closet, Mom stalked with towels the first day and snatches one, I turn the shower on hot then when it get worm enough I turn it in between hot and cold. I get in, the worm water feels good on my back, so I stand there for a while, when it finely woke me up finish my shower get out dry my hair with the towel then I wrap it around me and go back to my room.

It’s hot stuffy so I quickly got dressed and open the window next to my bed, and the one right when you walk in. I close my door and go down stairs Pete is watching TV and Mom is reading the newspaper, having breakfast together on Sundays was something my dad was very adamant about, so now that they are divorced Mom is very adamant about not eating together. I grab a bowl of cereal and eat it quickly, then go up to my room to finish the three boxes. I finish by lunch, so I go back down stairs to make a sandwich.

Hay, honey when did you get up I hear from the table she must have not noticed me before.

I came and got breakfast about four hours ago I said in a sarcastic voice. Made my lunch and ate at the table.

I’m sorry if this move ruined any plans you had with your friends she said after I took a couple of bites, totally misinterpreting my sarcasm for the bitterness of being here and misinterpreting bitterness over the situation for pettiness.

That’s not what I’m mad about I said as I went in for another bite.

Then what are you mad about!

Let’s see, you drug me away from people that under stood what I am going through, to a place where no one knows what happened or why I am the way I am

Polly it is better this way

Better for who, you, not me, you take me from a place where if I had a ‘fit’ that’s what she likes to call them they knew why and how to deal with it and they didn’t judge me for it, and take me to a place where they will judge me and they don’t know why it is happening, or how to deal with it

I storm off before it escalates. She may think it’s for the best but in reality it’s not; slow progress is better than no progress and I haven’t been freaking out as much and I don’t sit looking out the window anymore.

I still think this is for the best she yells behind me.

Whatever There is no winning with her; I don’t even know why I fight anymore. I go up and hang the curtains, maybe now I will be able to get some sleep. I lay on my bed for a while staring at the ceiling, I have this feeling that someone is watching me. I turn and look out the window in to the other room, the desk chair is pulled out far enough to look out the window, the window is open, and there is someone in the chair but I couldn’t see their face.

I walk over and close the curtains, then sit at my desk and try to memorize my school schedule on the map the school gave me; I only have two more days. After doing that for ten minutes I go to check my Zing account, no new messages, then my Group Book account, no new messages, story of my life, everyone says they will miss you but when you’re gone they don’t remember you.

Monday we go to get note books, back packs, and pencils and pens for the first day of school. I decide to hold off on getting a back pack for now. Tuesday, we don’t do anything accept for pack our bags for the next day. I am using my Battle Cry bag that slings over my shoulder. I go to bed early tonight, I don’t want there to be any chance I will sleep through my alarm and maybe in the morning it will feel like I actually got some sleep.

    CHAPTER 2

    FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

I wake up to my alarm, it is 6:30 am, I turn it off and roll over and wait for it to go off again, I do this till it is 7:30 am, then I get up get dressed, in a pair of tight jeans and a T-shirt with loco iron man club on it, I have a black tank top under it that is a little longer. I go to the bathroom, brush my teeth and then go back to my room sling my bag over my shoulder and grad my skate board.

I go down stairs and mom is waiting for me with a piece of toast. She goes back in to the kitchen and comes back out with a pop-tart for Pete, who came down just as I get done, with his bag and board, he eats and we leave at 8:00 am, the bus gets at the bus stop at 8:10, and it is two blocks away. Usually it would take us at an okay speed five minutes to walk but with our boards it took about three minutes.

When we got to the stop there are already kids there. Pete walked right up to a boy and asked You going to Thomas High School right.

The kid looks at him like he is stupid and finally says Yes, you must be new.

Yeah, me and my sister just moved here about four days ago Pete says without hesitation.

The kid smiles and looks at me So, what grade you in he says still looking at me.

Well, I’m a freshman Pete says trying to keep the kids attention.

And you I roll my eyes

Oh, her, she’s a junior Pete likes to talk for me. I’m not really a social person when I first meet some people, most people, OK all people. The bus finally pulls up after a few moments of that weird conversation. People start piling on, I wait but Pete goes ahead to get an empty seat, I made him promise to sit with me till the end of the first week. I am one of the last people on the bus and everyone is staring, first at me then at my board then back to me, most people’s reaction to me.

Pete is in the middle of the bus in a seat by himself, I sit next to him, and the bus is off we are the last pick up so we don’t have to wait long to get to school. When we do get there we have to go to the office to get our lunch accounts settled.

I put my board in my locker, which is broken so don’t have to use my combination to get in it, Score, and I make it to my first class a long time before the bell rings.

As I walk in the teacher said Hello, welcome to eleventh grade English I just smile and look down, I sit in the back of the class and take a single subject notebook out, opened it and write ENGLISH on the top of the page, then I turn the page and start to doodle.

I don’t notice the class slowly filling till I hear Hello my head shoots up and snaps to the right. There is a boy sitting there, I give a shy smile and look back down. I’m Ryan

I look at him and smile again Polly I say.

    Allie he said hesitantly,

No, L-E I said in a correcting tone.

Oh, like the letters, sorry, bet you get that a lot I smile and look back down, he is about to say something else when the bell rings.

The teacher gives a rehearsed speech which takes up half the period, he puts the supply list on the overhead and tells us to write it down then we can talk. When I get done I glance at Ryan, shut my note book and slid it in to my bag and put my bag on the desk, like half of the class. So you’re new this year he says.

Yeah I say, is it really that obvious.

Cool, what’s your next class that surprises me

Geometry with Miss Miler I say looking at my schedule.

Oh, well my next class is around there I’ll walk you he said with a big smile.

    Okay I say hesitantly.

The bell rings we stand up and walk out of class together, my head is down looking at my schedule, I start to turn right, when he pull me to the left This way he said under his breath.

When we get the class room he kind of shoves my in to the room, so I stumble in, the two people that were already in seats look at me for a second then go back to talking. Welcome to Geometry the girl behind the desk says. She looks too young to be a teacher. She gets up and walks over to me So are you a freshman or the new student she asks when we meet in the middle of the room

The new student I said quietly.

Okay, I’m Miss Miler and you are she says way too happily

L-E I just say the letters to avoid talking any longer then I need to.

Okay have a seat anywhere and she goes back to her desk. I sit in the back of the class again, no one talks to me this time, and I am glad.

The same thing happens in this class as the last, short speech and supply list. This time there isn’t a lot of time to talk before the bell rings.

I walk out of the class and there is Ryan waiting for me, I don’t go to him I just turn to go to my next class. So, what’s next he asks when he catches up with me.

U.S. History, with Mr. Horn I said as I exhaled.

That’s right over there we stop and he was pointing to a door across from us, and then he says continuing,

    Choir I said,

Oh, I don’t know where that is he said scratching his head.

I’ll find it I say before I walk off, and through the door he had pointed at.

Hello welcome to U.S. History a bored voice says from the desk in the front of the room, I walk across the back of the room to a seat next to the window. The same thing in this class too, but this time there was a girl sitting next to me and when it came time to talk she turns to me.

I glance over at her Hi, I’m Joe she said with a smile, Ryan, told me you have choir next, me too the pause after Ryan told me she has a crush on him, fine by me she can have him.

    Yeah and I smile.

So, you can follow me, okay she says in a preppy tone,

Thanks I say just to be polite, the bell finally rings.

I leave behind her, the Choir room is not that fare from U.S. History room, when we got to the room she stops to let me catch up What are you she says before she looks at me.

An alto I say staring at the room, and all the people in it,

Oh, you’ll sit on that side she says in a tone that has a hint of hatred in it, as she points to the far section of chairs. I sit in the chair in the front, and closest to the wall. This time she talks a little, then takes role, then we worm up a little then she leaves us to talk, no one talks to me here either, and again I am fine with that. I really don’t mix well with others at first and sometimes not at all and it seems like I won’t at all with Joe.

The bell rings, crap lunch I can’t sit with Pete because he has probable, most likely, already made friends and he is probably, most likely, going to sit with them. Oh well it isn’t the first time I don’t have any one to sit with and it probably will not be the last. I walk in to the cafeteria and scan it for empty tables, there are two. I get into the line for the food and by the time I get out of the line one of the tables is full with one spot left and the other one has a person at it. I walk over to the table with only one person at it, sit down and the room gets quiet, I look around a couple people are staring, a couple are trying not to, and the rest don’t care. I look at the boy that is sitting there, he glances up then goes back to what he is doing, so I look down eat a couple bites then begin playing with my food.

When I get completely bored I leave, as I get up to leave he glances at me again. I couldn’t help but to stare as he looks at me, when he looks away I unfreeze and leave. He is very cute, he has short, dark brown hair, a chiseled jaw, he has a gray long sleeved shirt with a brown short sleeved one over it, he looks like he has a good set of muscles under them, but I can’t really tell.

Just the way he looks makes him cute, no set style and the way he glanced at me made me feel like he doesn’t think he is better than me, I know that’s weird but it’s true. As I walk out I see Pete with a group of boys at a table near the doors, he sees me and waves all of the boys turn to see who he is waving at I gave him a three figure wave back. I go to locker, and stick my head in it.

It isn’t long before I hear Are you okay from behind me.

I’m fine I say with a little frustration I my voice.

Are you sure he says in a concurred voice.

I stand up Yeah, I’m sure I look at him he is in my history class.

You’re new to the school right he looks at me with a little surprise, I smile and nod once for my answer, Steve he sticks out his hand.

L-E I grab his hand and shake it once.

So, can I walk you to your next class he says hesitantly,

You really want to walk me all of five feet I say, pointing at the door in the same cove as my locker.

Well, if you put it like that I’ll see you later then he says, I smile and nod once again.

He leaves I go to class, Cooking my favorite back home, I walk in Name I hear from my right, it is an older lady,

    Polly I say.

She points to the far table next to the windows You’re in the blue group, Dear she smiles at me.

I quickly sit in one of the seats that face the door. The same thing in this class except she makes us introduce ourselves to our group, which in my group there are two girls, including me, and two boys, I go first so I don’t have to pay attention. I’m Polly, I’m new

It doesn’t take long before one of them ask the whole group what they had next, I’m not listening, so when it came my turn they are all staring at me. Oh, Art with Mrs. I get cut off

Clapper says the girl that asked in the first place Jan I think,

    Yeah I say

Me too she is way too excited, like I couldn’t figure that one out.

The bell rings sooner than I thought it would, but she waits for me to pack up my stuff. We walk almost to the complete other side of the building she doesn’t talk much so that’s a plus. We walk in and one table is full with only one seat left, Jan goes over and takes it, another table is half full, and the third one had two people sitting next to each other at it, I sit there.

Class starts the teacher gives a small speech then leaves us to talk, I doodle, like usual, this school like others has a set schedule on thing. The bell rings and I head to the gym for dance class, it’s weird I know, but I was in denial about moving when my Mom asked what extra classes I wanted to take, so I let her choose.

When I get there the teacher is taking out the bleachers, and when he gets done a bunch of kids climb on them to get a seat near the bottom, I go up to one of the upper ones, there is only like five pulled out so I’m not too far away from the front. I feel like someone staring at me, I look over to the left then the right, and on the end of the same bleacher I am sitting on is the boy from lunch. My eyes got wide, he is looking at me, not smiling, no emotion, I look back down slowly.

Polly someone sits beside me, I look, it is Ryan, then someone sits on the other side.

It is Steve, Hay he said before Ryan could talk, and the bell rings before I can talk.

Hello, class I’m Mr. John and this is Mrs. John and we will be you dance teachers the man who pulled the bleachers out says, his wife is standing next to him.

They went over the things we are going to learn and they demonstrated some for us. Ryan leans over in the middle and asks if they let us choose our partners if I would be his, right after he asked Mrs. John said they would be picking our partners for us, thank God.

Like all of the other classes we have time to talk, both Ryan and Steve ask me question after question and I didn’t really have to answer them because every time one would ask the other would intervene. The bell finally rings every one stands up except for me, I have to put my stuff in my bag.

    You coming Steve says.

Go ahead, I know where my locker is I say jokingly, he smirks and they both leave.

I look over my shoulder, he is still there, putting something in his bag; I sling my bag over my shoulder and start down the bleachers. When I reach the he is right behind me, I open the door he grabs it behind me, it feel like he is following me. But it turns out his locker is on the other side off the out cove were mine is, Pete is already at my locker when I get there. I grab my board and we go out wait for the bus.

Pete and I sit in almost the same spot as we did on the way to school, half way through the ride I feel like someone is watching me, I look behind me but I didn’t see any one looking but I do see Steve though, I hope he doesn’t see me; he gets off at the stop before me.

Finally the bus stops at my stop and I get up and get off quickly, I stand there waiting for Pete when he gets to me, we are on our boards heading home. We are few houses away when, my board got caught on a rough spot in the sidewalk that Pete misses because he was farther over, it flings me off, and I hit the ground rolling. I got back up right away walk the five feet to my board pick it up and get back on.

I walk in to the house and Mom is there to greet us, How was, what happened she says holding up my arm.

Gee, I don’t know I went to school Pete said ignoring Mom’s scowl, I laugh.

My board got caught on a piece of side walk, it doesn’t even hurt I inshore her,

Go upstairs and clean that she orders

Yes’m maser I say sarcastically, she ignores me. I go to my room and put my board against the wall and throw my bag on the bed then go to the bathroom I splash some water on my wound, to get the dirt and small rocks out of it. I turn to back to my room and Pete is standing there.

Mom thought you’d just splash water on it, that’s way she sent me up with this he said shaking a can of disinfectant spray, way too happy with himself.

I hold my arm up, turn my head slightly, and hold my breath, he spares it quickly. It stung like no other mother, it smells just as bad. He hands me the spray and goes to his room, I put the spray in the cabinet above the sink, and go back to my room. My stereo is on the wall next to the door, I must have missed it when I went in before. I pick it up and take it in to my room shutting the door behind me.

I put the main unit on the filing cabinet one speaker on my desk and the other one on my dresser I plug it
