The book builds the case for the meaningful pursuit of life, walking towards ones purpose for existence. This, being a fundamental phenomenon in the life of a person, can only be inspired by God. Faith in Jesus Christ is necessary towards inspirational transformation in the life of a person. It calls for a deliberate plan to undergo a mindset change to redefining ones meaningful pursuit of life. The authors personal life experience is made use to illustrate the case. It draws contrast between the practices of the author before and after an encounter with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and those of his fellow professionals. Character formation in the life of a child is very important in a health perspective of life. Majority of the causes of moral decline in Tanzania results from negative societal impact on the youth. The latter pick lessons from the actions of the former.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the persons who have supported me in achieving this work. Although on the surface of the matter the credit appears to be going to one individual, the author, the truth is that more persons have contributed to bringing this work to a reality. As a person, I am what I am because of the impact that many people that I interacted with have had on me. My reasoning, visioning, and perspectives have thus been an outcome of the various interactions with the many individuals whether meeting them face to face or reading their written material which I cannot list in this book. So I can confidently say I am what I am because of what they are and have contributed to my being. However, I would still like to mention a few of those who really have had a direct touch on this project. On the forefront, I thank God, the almighty, for endowing me with the dream and enablement to fulfilling it. Indeed, I encountered trying times while on the process of documenting the stories of my life and some of the ideas that flowed into my mind. Many times I found myself much depressed while at the middle of the assignment. However, a private time in meditation of the Word of God and prayer gave me fresh inspiration to continue the work. God lit and continued the fire within me. My other appreciation goes to my lovely wife Aisa and children, Omom, Gift, and Humble, for forbearing with me for the time I took from them. When I was in the process of writing, I used the time that I should have shared with them on the work. Chapter One

Introduction

The Passion

The year was 2002. I was consumed with a passion to comprehend the best reward that life could offer relative to its hustles. I began to feel that some of the perspectives I held about life did not make much sense anymore. The phrase, ‘the pursuit of life,’ constantly lingered in my mind. So I decided to consult English dictionaries for the meaning of the word pursuit. I figured out that if I were going to live life with a sense of purpose and direction, I had to understand the meaning of the above phrase, of which the meaning of the word pursuit was crucial.

The Encarta and Webster’s dictionaries’ definitions of the word appealed to me. According to the Encarta dictionary, pursuit is the act of striving for something; the effort made to try to achieve or obtain something over a period of time. On the other hand, the Webster’s dictionary defines pursuit as a following with a view to reach, accomplish, or obtain; endeavour to attain or gain. Thus, we engage in the pursuit of such things as knowledge, happiness, pleasure, power, honour, and so forth.

The Meaningful Pursuit of Life Explained

I pondered the dictionary meaning of the word pursuit and tried to apply it to the context of my consuming passion for a new understanding of the meaning of life, particularly the phrase ‘the pursuit of life,’ with which I was now inundated. I was led to conclude that the meaningful pursuit of life is the best effort put forth with a view to accomplishing the purpose for which a person is created to live for. It is the passionate zeal to accomplish the purpose for which one exists. Why am I in existence? What do I live for? A better response to these questions would be ‘to accomplish the purpose for which I was created and live for.’ However, before we come to the point of exerting the effort to achieve the purpose for which we are created, we will first need to discover the purpose for our existence. That means there is an effort we need to apply to discover the purpose of our existence before we can think of its attainment. Now, let us assume that we have already discovered the purpose for our existence; when we apply effort and ultimately achieve it, we then have reason to consider ourselves successful. And we will definitely derive great satisfaction. It is very much fulfilling to achieve one’s purpose in life. And I think, although there is the climax of the satisfaction you derive from attainment of the purpose, the process of discovery and effort exertion towards the attainment of the purpose should bring to you more or less the same level of satisfaction if you don’t want to mess up your entire life. Here is why it is true that in the natural life we live, we tend to use considerable time on the process of exertion of effort and only a very brief moment on the end result. Sometimes the very final result of one’s venture may never come to complete fruition during his lifetime. However, I think that just the knowledge of being in the right course is enough to bring great satisfaction. Meaningful pursuit of life is a lifelong undertaking and not a onetime occasion. Therefore, we must live our lives in a manner that makes the process more enjoyable throughout the entire quest. There is need for us to try and ensure that we prolong the most enjoyable part of the meaningful pursuit of life by what I will call a reverse projection of the desired future back into the now. Here is what I mean by a reverse projection: when we set out at the very beginning, we have a visualized state of the end. The state of the end will then propel us enthusiastically into action to pursue it. So the joy of the state of the end propels us to move into action. We then have to direct our steps such that the process or the execution part gives us the confidence of our attainment of the end result, the ultimate goal or destiny. Now, I understand how difficult this can be. Often times I have met people who are deeply immersed in doubt in their lives. I might have personally experienced a blurred orientation at some point in time such that it felt as if there was never going to be a realization of the ultimate thing. As a result, most people are not sure of their destinations and have surrendered to the course of no purpose. Under such circumstances, the wind will take them wherever it blows. They are not sure of anything. They get tossed from one corner to the other and they cannot tell what they stand for. In such situations, circumstances or other people take advantage of them. There are people who are ready to show you the direction which unfortunately is not the right direction for you at all. They themselves do not know what they stand for or where they are going, but they will tell you they know. On the other hand, the Devil or Satan is actually the influence behind those circumstances and what he will bring to you is destruction in the end. That should not be the case though under the context of our subject of discussion: the meaningful pursuit of life. We must be more certain of the destination and determined to attain it. God allows and wants us to be sure and in charge of the
