About this ebook

Celtic Cycles: Guidance from the Soul on the Spiritual Journey realigns the souls wisdom with the rhythms and creatures of the natural world. Writings of Carl Jung on the feminine principle illuminate our understanding of the soul and bring clarity to the conversation. What sets Celtic Cycles apart from other books on the Celtic tradition is the addition of the chakra system to the eight Celtic celebrations. In this way, the various levels of the soul body are honored as a vessel of spiritual wisdom. The colors of the rainbow spectrum enliven the bodies and contribute to healing at the soul level. In each ritual section, there are guided meditations, dialogues with spirit animals, and interactions with fairy tales. Formatted in workbook style, Celtic Cycles is designed to lead you on a spiritual journey that comes from the guidance of your soul.

    PREFACE

Rooted in my psyche is a wheel on which the cycles of the months and seasons turn throughout the year. No one ever taught me this wheel; it has always been there, perhaps as genetic material since one of my sisters also reports having it. On this wheel, the winter months are at the top with the spring months on the left turning toward the summer months at the bottom and moving to the autumn months on the right.

When I learned about the Celtic cycles and seasonal celebrations, I came to the realization that the Wheel of the Year is a natural law with which we have fallen out of rhythm at the expense of our souls. The soul has an affinity for this natural law of cyclical seasons and can give us guidance if we learn how to be in conscious relationship with it.

Writing about the Celtic cycles has been very healing for me and a source of great joy. Along the way, I have had valuable help from members of my writers’ groups as well as friends and family members. I’d like to acknowledge and thank each of them for his or her specific contributions:

    •   Jane Leonardelli: Jane has taken several of my writing classes, and over the years, we have become friends. One day over lunch, I told her of my idea to write a book on the Celtic seasonal cycles, and with her enthusiastic encouragement, the seed was planted.

    •   Colleen Rae: Not long after the lunch with Jane, the universe responded with a shamanistic creative writing class offered by another friend, Colleen Rae. Under Colleen’s able guidance, the seed of creativity began to germinate, and I had the beginnings of a book.

    •   Ann Burrus: Ann was a participant in Colleen’s class, and later on, we became part of a writers’ group together. Ann never failed to give me an encouraging word as well as many practical and creative suggestions. In fact, it was her suggestion that I write the dialogue among the animals in chapter 12.

    •   Nancy Tusa: Also a member of one of my writers’ groups, Nancy shares my interest in the writings of Carl Jung and Jungian analyst Marion Woodman. With Nancy’s helpful guidance, I was better equipped to incorporate Jungian psychology into this book. As a skillful writer and editor, Nancy easily spotted places that needed revising.

    •   Jane Krupnick: A friend of Nancy’s, Jane joined the group to write about her adventures on her sailboat and other travels. Her writing inspired me to include some of my own travel experiences, as the soul is expanded through taking trips whether on land or by sea. Jane’s questions about the more esoteric parts of my book led me to greater clarity.

    •   Barbara Barr: With her sharp intellect, Barbara also posed insightful questions in the writers’ group. Her love for the natural world and its creatures was a tremendous boon. When I was writing the animal dialogues, for example, a very helpful suggestion from Barbara was to research some of the animals’ instinctual habits.

    •   Carolynn Carson: Also closely connected to the rhythms of the natural world, Carolynn immediately understood what I was writing about. Her love for Native American traditions, as well as her understanding of Jungian psychology, was a good fit with my writing. Carolynn is a prime example of someone who lives her life by a natural law.

    •   Jennie Ratcliffe: At times, Carolynn, Jennie, and I would meet at a local café to collaborate on our writing and share our mutual concern for the wider natural world. Somehow, the act of sharing ideas taps the depths of the unconscious. Jenny is a master at this, and she usually came up with insights I never would have considered.

    •   Laura Dunham: Laura and I have several things in common—our background as Presbyterians, our devotion to the Divine Feminine, and a love of writing. We formed a writers’ group, during which Laura wrote one book and started another! Her initiative was an inspiration for bringing my book to closure. Plus, she appreciated my humor.

    •   Joseph Asterita: When Laura invited her friend Joseph to join our group, I recognized and appreciated his vivid imagination, which encouraged me to use mine. He always made a point to praise the parts of my writing that he found particularly insightful. Joseph has a logical mind and alerted me to places where my writing could be more coherent.

    •   Karen Ziegler: Like Joseph, Karen also offered astute observations about my writing. Her sensitivity to the feminine gave me the green light to write about this aspect of the divine. During the time of our writers’ group, Karen won first place in an essay contest sponsored by a resource center for women’s spirituality.

    •   Carol Shumate: When Karen took a full-time job, I invited my friend Carol to join the group, knowing that the fluency with which she writes would be a help to us all. While Carol came to the group late in the process of my book, I nevertheless learned from her many ways to enhance and improve my prose.

    •   Ruth Hamilton: As the manuscript neared completion, I thought it would be a good idea to ask some other people to take a look at it. Ruth immediately came to mind. It was her idea that readers try nonverbal forms of creativity. As the founder of Carolina Health and Humor Association and Arts Can Heal, Ruth practices ways to heal the soul.

    •   Dan Grandstaff: Having worked with Dan on a previous writing project, I knew that he would offer some creative ideas. At his suggestion, I changed the titles of the chapters to better engage readers in the content. Dan suggested ways to develop the interactive exercises and encouraged the direction of chapter 11.

    •   Martha Phifer: Just when I thought the manuscript was complete, my friend Martha came in and saved the day. Her comments and questions about some of the content forced me to go back through and add, subtract, and sometimes multiply. Martha is one of the best editors I know, and her revisions have made a huge difference.

    •   Lori Loomis: Along with Martha, my daughter-in-law, Lori, asked just the right questions and made the appropriate revisions to bring the manuscript up to a higher level. It was helpful to have the impressions of someone from her generation. She especially liked the meditations and exercises and recommends that other young people try them.

    •   Corinna Loomis: Another member of the younger generation, niece Corinna Loomis contributed the beautiful art pieces found throughout this book. To view her work, visit her new Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/BREATHandNECTAR. Along with her art, Corinna teaches yoga to balance body, soul, and spirit.

I also thank my husband, Bob, for his invaluable help and patience with my computer angst. To other family members and friends who have listened to my ideas and found them intriguing, please know that you have influenced me in many important ways. My appreciation is boundless.
