    Hills of Gold

    Chapter 1

    Difficult Times

    Katie was the only daughter to Jon and Helen. They lived in a nice, neat cottage tucked into the mountain side amongst a dense woodland of pine trees with a lovely aroma of wild flowers throughout the year, a kaleidoscope of scenery, a most beautiful place to live, unspoilt by the invasion of development and space—a quiet place, several miles from nearest community.

    Katie’s dad and mum worked very hard, maintaining a living from small livestock and little farming, with antiquated machinery; all these contributed to a difficult life.

    Jon, Katie’s dad was a good-looking man, much appreciated amongst the villagers for the sermons he gave on Sundays from his position of Methodist lay preacher, a position he took over from his dad, who helped to finance the church many years ago when plans were passed for the church to be built.

    Jon would toil from morn to sunset, making market once a week with produce from his farm and eggs, and home-baking made from Katie’s mum’s kitchen. A large open stove fuelled with pine logs gave off a inviting warmth throughout the kitchen.

    Helen, Katie’s mum would be up at crack of dawn to bake bread, pies, cakes, pastries, anything that would sell and help out the family budget. When smoke was bellowing out from the tall red brick chimney and drifted across the valley, it added to the most beautiful aroma that nature could provide; the villagers certainly knew when Helen was baking.

    Katie helped her mum as much as possible till tired, and at night-time would retire to her room; her bedroom was a cosy
