    Chapter 1

    Another School Day

    Today was going to be a beautiful day, Nate could tell. He adjusted the curtain of his bedroom window and peered out into the windswept street, where the trees had lost most of their leaves. The weather was brisk and cold enough that he and his sister would need to bundle up and wear their coats before going outside that day. They lived in a cozy apartment building with their single mom, Ethel. She was a school teacher at Saint Rose Elementary. Both of her children attended the same school, and Ethel expected them to earn good grades, which they were both inclined to do. Nate had just turned 10, and was in the fourth grade and Faith was 14, in the eighth grade. They both had waited a year later than the rest of the students because their birthdays occurred after the school year started. Nate heard his older sister Faith’s footsteps outside his door as she descended the stairs for breakfast. He donned his school uniform and carefully walked down the stairs to see what his mom had prepared for breakfast. He could smell omelets cooking and wanted to get to the table before they were cold.

    Both children sat politely in anticipation, greeting Ethel with a cheerful, Good morning mom! Today is the first day of the rest of our lives!

    Why indeed it is! replied Ethel. A very good day to bring some packaged food with us to donate to the food drive at school. Saint Rose Elementary had a food donation program every year to provide meals for those who weren’t able to provide for themselves due to poverty.

    After breakfast, they all bustled out of the door and piled into the family station wagon, to make the journey to St. Rose. Faith and Nate were always the first to arrive, since their mom was a teacher and had to be at the school before the children arrived.

    After school, Nate and Faith met their mom Ethel in her classroom. She tidied up her teaching desk and placed the homework that needed to be corrected in her portable computer bag.
