Robert Burns: Ten of His Best
()
About this ebook
This Hommage to Burns is my small attempt to share with others the genius of a man whose life was short but whose spirit is still very much alive. I hope by creating this tiny snapshot of his work that the admiration I feel is conveyed to the reader.
Carol Cockayne
Carol Ann Cockayne grew up in South Ayrshire, in the coastal town of Prestwick, two miles away from Robert Burns birthplace in Alloway, Ayr. Being familiar with the customs, habits and local dialect she can identify with and understand the humour and old Scots language. Also the typical character of the locality. She attended Middlesex University in London, where she gained an Hons. Degree in Fashion / Textile Design. Later qualifying as a teacher of Art/ Textiles. She has worked as a designer, had her own freelance design studio and then when her first son was born started to teach. Moving back to Scotland in the late eighties, she started again to get to know the area where she grew up as a child. Her interest in Burns is life-long, attracted by the mercurial wit shown in his work, and the obvious linguistic connection to her youth. Many of the phrases and vocabulary used in Burns work are still in use today. The ancient Scots tongue comes not from Celtic roots but German. This book is her attempt to visualise the theme of the poem or song by Burns and capture the essence of his reflections. This is her first foray into the world of print.
