    INTRODUCTION

    RUSTLING LEAVES

….................................in the dark as you make your way down the trail—the faint glow of a crescent moon shining through the bare limbs of the forest casting shadows upon the ground. You’re walking with your father and two of his friends, looking forward to a good night of hunting.

Your father strains to hold back the three Walker hounds fighting their leashes, anticipating their release. You know their excitement, you’ve hunted with them many times, Raccoon, Bobcat and Bear in Tennessee. Their brave and won’t back down from any beast. Knowing they are with you gives one courage in the dark forest.

You look at your father for an explanation, but he is silent. You hear running and snapping of twigs coming down the path ahead, your light shines, three pair of glowing eyes reflect back from the darkness. Frightened at first and then just a moment of relief as the three hounds bound toward you.

The relief is short lived as they streak by, their tails tucked low, they continue out of sight from the way they had been led. A deep rumbling roar springs from the darkness in the direction which the hounds had turn tail with fright, crashing and snapping of
