There was once a party of half-a-dozen large, serious men locked in deep discussion. In the middle of it, one took a small whistle from his pocket and blew it: “Peet!” At which one of the others shook his head in disagreement, pulled a similar whistle out and went: “Pee-ow!”
They were, of course, discussing the finer points on how to call roe, which everybody talks about with a great deal of theory and usually very little practical success. Continentals are mad about it and think of the short period in late Tuly and early August when calling is effective as the high peak of the stalking year. We have still a lot to learn from them before calling can in any way be relied
