CHAPTER 1
Wormie Wormald
––––––––
Wormie Wormald squinted at his reflection in the mirror. Something was very wrong. He looked all fuzzy and out of shape. In fact, he looked quite ghostly.
‘I wonder if I’m dead?’ thought Wormie to himself.
Suddenly, the answer hit him on the head. He reached over, picked up his glasses and put them on. All traces of fuzziness disappeared. He was his usual purple self again. Wormie grinned at himself, and himself grinned back.
Wormie was an unusual worm in that he was a bright shade of purple. Most worms were pink or grey, or some colour in between. But from an early age Wormie had loved berries. Any kind of berries really. He loved blueberries, blackberries, mulberries, loganberries, strawberries, raspberries and every other berry there was. Wormie ate berries as often as he could. The result was that over time he turned more and more purple. His mother didn’t worry. She knew that berries were full of goodness and no-one had ever died from eating too many berries. She also knew that some things in life were just meant to be. If Wormie was purple, it was for a very good reason. Wormie still hadn’t figured out just what that reason was.
Because Wormie was different he was teased a lot at school. For most kids, being bullied would be a burden. But Wormie turned it into a positive. He figured that if he was going to be teased anyway it may as well be for a lot of things rather than just one thing. So he took to wearing a top hat and bow tie. He’d seen pictures of men wearing them in his favourite book about Sherlock Holmes, the great detective. He thought he looked very handsome. So did his mother. Sadly, the other kids thought he looked like a dork and teased him cruelly. Wormie just laughed and ignored them.
Wormie was very conscious of always being careful when out alone. A purple worm is a very easy target for people who are less than nice. So Wormie took to carrying a walking stick as a means of defence. He didn’t need it to help him walk, but he felt safer with it. Somehow, the walking stick just made his top hat and bow tie look even more perfect.
Wormie was horribly short sighted. He could hardly see a hand in front of his face. This is very common in worms, and
