    The Corsair's Tempest - C. Marie Bowen

    Dedication

This one is for Delilah, with thanks.

    Chapter 1

    Jérôme Leveque

Pain lanced across Jérôme Leveque’s shoulder as a brief lapse in concentration allowed his opponent’s blade to slide through his defense.

Thoughts of his beloved had plagued him more than usual this past fortnight. His cursed immortality carried the memories of a thousand years and dozens of lifetimes with her. Pirates spilled across the plank onto the treasure ship’s deck, disarming the crew and moving them away from the cargo hold.

The Spaniard tossed down his cutlass with a curse.

A wise decision. Jérôme pointed to the man’s crew, indicating he should join them on the aft deck.

The man quickly complied, leaving the Spanish captain on the fo’c’sle with Jérôme.

Jérôme backed toward the plank, sword at the ready, to guard their retreat.

Two privateers lugged a chest full of Spanish gold from the hold. They grinned at their quartermaster standing guard at the plank.

Jérôme gave the men a nod as they passed, then raised a brow at a foolish Spaniard lad.

A boy of perhaps eight summers pulled a toy sword from the sash around his waist. The child struck
