    The Secret

I became even more excited and nervous by the minute anticipating what Kaden might say.

Sara, I have been keeping a secret from you, but not intentionally. I have just been waiting for the right time to tell you. He paused for a few moments. I come from a royal family; matter-of-fact I am next in line to become king, Kaden informed me.

I stared at him stunned. I couldn’t believe what my ears just heard. I was engaged to a prince! Although this is exciting to me I knew what my duties would be and I wasn’t sure I could live up to that standard.

Did you not think to mention this to me before you asked me to be your wife? I asked breathlessly.

I thought if I did you would decline my proposal.

I stood up crossing my arms as I overlooked the gardens. I loved Kaden dearly and was expecting to live the rest of my life with him as any normal couple would. But now that I know he comes from a royal family I don’t know if I can handle what comes of our duties as prince and princess.

I hope by me keeping this from you hasn’t made you think twice about being my wife, Kaden said.

I want to be your wife more than anything, but I’m concerned that I will not be able to live up to the duties I would be expected to complete, I replied.

    I have faith in you.

You may have faith in me, but I don’t.

Are you declining my engagement to you?

No. I’m having a hard time taking in what you’ve just told me. I’m not some money greedy whore who would jump at the idea of becoming wealthy.

He chuckled. Well, instead of keeping me guessing; what’s your answer?

I sighed deeply. Are you sure you want me not only as your wife, but as Rome’s princess?

Of course I do, Sara. I wouldn’t have asked you for your hand in marriage if I didn’t.

I was silent for a few moments as I thought of what my decision might be. I had already accepted Kaden’s proposal so if I disagreed to being Rome’s princess then I wouldn’t become Kaden’s wife that I yearned to be.

I pulled him to me and kissed him sweetly. I would be pleased to accept you as my royal husband. He grinned as far as his mouth would let him as he lifted me into his arms. I wrapped my legs around his waist as we hugged, but Kaden seemed to be gripping me a little too tightly because my body was beginning to go numb. Kaden, if you keep squeezing me they’ll be nothing left of me.

He chuckled as he sat me down. I’m sorry. I’m just so happy!

We grinned at each other as we kissed tenderly. Then we joined Heather for dinner.

Remember when you asked me if I told Sara that I come from a royal family and I said no? Kaden quizzed Heather.

Yes, and I told you that should have been the first thing you told her, Heather replied.

Well, by me waiting to tell her until after I proposed didn’t turn her away.

    Well, that’s wonderful to hear!

I might have to become accustomed with my royal status, but I’m glad Kaden is the one that’ll be there by my side all the way, I grinned.

Heather smiled. I will be here to help you too.

Thank you. I won’t hesitate to ask for your help, I grinned.

Please don’t. I won’t know if you need help if you don’t ask.

After we finished devouring dinner Kaden and I took Sadie outside to play as he and I lay on a blanket looking up at the shining stars.

This is just the beginning of our crazy life together, Kaden stated.

I giggled. At least it won’t be boring.

Even if I weren’t from a royal family I would make our life worth living.

I grinned. How would you do that?

Well, I’m not sure, but I would make it happen.

I propped myself on my arm as I ran my fingers through his sandy blonde hair.

I still can’t believe my parents let me move in with you at such a young age, I stated.

It took me quite some time to get their approval, Kaden replied.

I think they gave in because they trust us.

I’m glad your Mom and Dad agreed to letting you move in with me and for letting me be your fiancé. You are still quite young so I feared they’d disapprove.

What did you think when they said that you could propose?

I jumped out of my seat and hugged your Mom and Dad until they told me they were losing their circulation.

I giggled. You’re already trying to get rid of my parents, huh? I joked.

He chuckled. I would never get rid of your parents I would just take you very far away from them. He continued the joke.

I pushed him on his chest feeling his abs through his shirt. I quickly removed my hand feeling awkward as I lay back next to him.

You don’t have to be afraid to touch me.

    I’m not afraid.

    What’s wrong then?

You know the first day I moved in we made love?

    Yes. He sounded worried.

I felt like we should have waited longer to make love. I told my mother we weren’t interested in having sex, but yet we’ve already done it.

I understand. I think we just let our guards down. It’s hard to resist sexual temptation, especially when you are such a great kisser.

I grinned. Should I pretend to suck at kissing so it’ll turn your sexual desire towards me off?

I’m crazy for thinking that! Even if you sucked at kissing; I’d still feel that desire.

    Maybe we shouldn’t kiss then.

Are you insane? I couldn’t go a day without kissing your luscious lips.

I smiled as I leaned in and kissed him momentarily.

I couldn’t go a day without kissing you either, I replied.

So what do you say about waiting to have sex again until our wedding night? Kaden suggested.

I think we should at least wait until I’m eighteen. I smiled.

He grinned widely. Okay. I can deal with that, I hope.

I giggled. You’ll be just fine. Relationships are not based on sex you know.

You’re right. They’re not, but a guy can only resist the urge for so long especially when there is a gorgeous girl around. He kissed me.

I giggled. When the time comes to make love again I know it will be exhilarating!

You bet it will! So, when do you plan to tell your Mom and Dad about my family being royal?

    I’ll tell them tomorrow.

He smiled as he edged his arm beneath my head pulling me close to him.

The next morning as Kaden and I sat down for breakfast his phone rang so he excused himself from the table. When he came back, he did not sit down instead he took my hand and led me out the front door.

I have to go to Rome now, Kaden informed me.

Are you serious? I questioned sadly.

Yes, I have to go! We can speak over webcam.

I eyed him curiously. First he tells me he’s becoming king of Rome and now he’s running off without me!

I will be gone today and half of tomorrow. I should arrive home around five in the evening, Kaden said.

I wish I could go, I replied sadly.

I wish you could too, but I’ll only be gone for a day and a half so there’s really no point for you to come.

He kissed my lips swiftly then he climbed into his truck and I watched as he drove away.

After I ate breakfast alone I went to my room. I was lying on Kaden’s pillow smelling his brand of shampoo as tears trickled down my cheeks soaking his pillow when I suddenly sat upright in bed and thought, I knew events like this would come up where Kaden would have to leave, but I didn’t expect it to happen so soon. I’ll have to learn to deal with this in a better way. I can’t go crying my eyes out every time he leaves.

I placed Sadie on my bed then I grabbed my laptop placing it in front of me as I lay on my stomach. I logged onto Facebook seeing that Anna was also on so I sent her a chat message,

    Hey! I greeted her.

Sara! What are you doing? Anna replied.

    I am missing Kaden!

I thought you moved in with him?

I did. He went to Rome.

    Why did he go there?

He didn’t say because he left in such a rush, but I’m thinking it has something to do with him becoming king of Rome.

Anna didn’t reply for what seemed like minutes. I was getting ready to ask if she was still there when her message appeared.

You mean you’ll be princess of Rome!

    Yes, I will be.

Wow! My best friend is going to be a princess!

    Yeah, pretty amazing, huh?

Of course! You don’t seem so enthused by the way your message is typed.

I’m just trying to take everything in and come to the fact that I have such a big commitment when I become Mrs. Rittenhouse.

I’m sure Kaden will be there for you all the way.

I know he will, but this is a very big person I have to be.

I don’t know how to make this easier on you?

It’s okay. How have you and Rick been?

We are great! We are going to dinner and a movie tonight.

That is great! I would like to do that with Kaden.

By what you just told me there isn’t a money issue so make a date and go.

    He is busy most days.

Well, I’m sure he will make time for you.

How could he not? I’m too gorgeous to say no to.

Ha-ha! I’m sorry I have to go. Rick wants to take me somewhere before we go to dinner. I just got on here so I could tell all the ladies what my man and I are doing tonight to make them jealous. I’m just kidding about that last part.

Ha-ha! Have a great night out on your date.

I will and I want you to cheer up! You are engaged to a prince! Think about it.

    I smiled. Okay, bye.

    Bye.

I signed off and shut my laptop. I smiled to myself. She always cheers me up! I am glad Anna’s my best friend! I petted Sadie. She did not acknowledge me.

I laughed. Well, at least my friends will acknowledge me, I said aloud to Sadie. She still did not move. I laughed again.

I took out my cell phone and phoned my mom hoping she would allow me over for dinner tonight.

    Hello? Mom answered.

Mom, it’s Sara. I was wondering if I could come over for dinner tonight, I said.

    Miss us that bad already?

    Yeah and Kaden isn’t here.

Oh, well of course you can come over. I’ll be there at six-thirty to pick you up.

    Okay. See you then. Bye.

    Bye.

An hour before my mom was going to pick me up my laptop beeped letting me know I had an incoming webcam message. When I opened my laptop I saw Kaden’s handsome face filling the screen.

Kaden, I am so happy to see you! I said overjoyed.

He smiled. I am happy to see you too!

    How are things in Rome?

They are fine; my parents want to say hello.

Kaden turned the computer toward his mother and father. They seemed to be in a library room because I saw nothing but book shelves filled with books behind their bodies.

When Kaden’s father appeared on the screen he introduced himself as King Thomas. He was quite tall and rather chubby in his navy blue pin lined suite. He had sparkling blue eyes that seemed to draw you in to him as being kind and sociable. He had graying hair and a cleaned shaved face.

Kaden’s mother introduced herself as Queen Rohanda. She wore a khaki suite and was rather petite and skinny with shoulder length sandy blonde hair. She wore glasses over her beautiful brown eyes that seemed to smile at you.

It’s nice to finally see you, Sara. Kaden has told us so much about you; leaving only our imagination to help us visualize you and I have to say you’re so much prettier than what my visions showed me, Rohanda stated.

    I smiled shyly.

Oh, I can see Kaden didn’t mention you were shy. You can’t be shy around us it’s impossible, Thomas added.

I giggled. I’m so nervous about becoming Rome’s princess.

Don’t worry about your royal status. I will be here to help you as well as many other members of our family. We won’t leave you to figure out things by yourself.

I smiled. Thank you. I feel better knowing that.

Well, it was nice seeing you, but I hope we’ll meet one day soon in person, Thomas said.

I grinned as his parent’s bid me good-bye. When Kaden re-appeared on the screen we spoke briefly because it was around eight in the morning there and Kaden had so much to do before he came back home. After I told Kaden good-bye my mom arrived a few moments later. Once we arrived at my parent’s house we sat right down to dinner.

So, Sara, how do you like living at Heather’s? Dad asked.

It’s been nice so far, I replied.

So why is Kaden not there? Mom asked.

He had to take a day and a half trip to Rome, I replied.

Oh. What was so important he had to do there for him not to take you? Dad asked.

I’m guessing it had to do something with him becoming king of Rome, I replied.

Mom and Dad stopped eating as their eyes grew huge as they stared at me.

Kaden’s a prince! How long have you known about this? Mom asked.

    Since yesterday, I replied.

Wow, Sara, Kaden’s just full of surprises, Dad huffed.

What do you think about this? Mom asked.

I’m just hoping I can live up to the status as Rome’s princess, I replied.

Are you sure you want this? Dad asked.

I know I want to be with Kaden for the rest of my life and in order for me to be able to do that I will have to accept him and his royal family, I replied.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Kaden; he’s a good guy, but I don’t want to see your heart broken, Dad said.

Why would you think that? I quizzed sternly.

He’s still young. There will be an awfully lot of pretty girls around him, Dad informed me.

Oh, Joe, stop worrying her. She’ll handle this just fine and Kaden only has eyes for, Sara, Mom spoke sternly.

How do you know he only has eyes for Sara? Dad quizzed Mom.

Because he asked her to marry him which we agreed to let him do because we see Kaden as a decent, good hearted guy, Mom replied.

No, you agreed to let him propose to Sara. I told you Sara was too young to be engaged, she still has her whole life ahead of her, Dad replied.

You still agreed, Mom began cleaning up the dishes.

Dad took Riley to bathe her and get her ready for bed.

I’m sorry, Mom I shouldn’t have said anything in front of Dad, I apologized.

Don’t be silly, Sara. Your Dad will get over it, Mom slightly smiled.

Why did Dad agree to let Kaden propose to me if he thought I was too young yet?

I think he just doesn’t want to let his little girl go.

I smiled. That’s silly. I’ll always be his little girl no matter how old I am.

I know, Sara. He’s just having a hard time with this whole situation and by you telling us that Kaden’s a soon to be king your father is probably thinking he’ll never see you again once you marry Kaden.

That’s crazy if he’s thinking that because no matter how busy I am I’ll always call and visit on weekends that I’m free.

Don’t worry, Sara. He’ll come to terms with all of this. So I’m excited about this! My daughter is going to be a real life princess! Mom stopped washing the dishes and sat down at the table with me grinning.

I grinned widely. I know! It’s exciting, but I’m so nervous and scared I won’t live up to my royal status.

Nonsense, Sara. You are a strong girl and will do just fine as being Rome’s princess.

Everyone keeps telling me that and I don’t believe them.

You have to have faith in yourself, Sara. If you keep thinking negatively then that’s what you’ll get.

I sighed. This is just so much for me to take in.

I know. You’d be crazy not to think that, but you are crazy for thinking you can’t live up to being Rome’s princess because I know you can.

I smiled. I don’t think I’m as strong hearted as you, Mom.

Of course you are. I did carry you for nine months you know. She grinned as she went back to the sink to finish the dishes.

Mom wore a house dress and an apron draped over her short stature and skinny physique. Mom repeatedly tossed her head trying to keep her shoulder-length brown hair out of her face. I strolled over and put her hair in a ponytail for her.

Thank you, Sara. I thought after all these years of doing dishes I’d learn to pull my hair back into a bun, Mom laughed as she glanced at me with me with her sparkling brown eyes. Do you remember when I used to sit you on the counter to help me with the dishes and instead of you helping me you played in the soapy water, splashing me when you saw I wasn’t looking, Mom laughed.

I grinned widely. Yeah, I remember. I’m sure going to miss this house when I move to Rome.

It’ll always be here. Mom grinned.

It will, but what if you and Dad plan to move in the years to come?

We will never sell this house. We will keep it always.

I smiled. I never thought I’d be one of those kids that would miss living at home.

Well, I’m glad you do, but you’ll soon have to move on because you will be getting married when you’re of age and I’m positive neither you nor Kaden want to live here with us you’ll want your own home to make memories in.

Mom and I chatted for a while. Dad never came back downstairs with Riley so I assumed he was either asleep or dodging me. Once I was back at Heather’s house I readied myself for bed. As I lay there on Kaden’s pillow I yearned to call him just to hear his voice once more before I fell asleep, but no sooner than the thought surpassed my mind my eyelids closed.

    2

    Sweet 16

When Kaden came back, I greeted him with open arms and kisses. I had missed him so much! I also explained to him what had happened when I went to my parent’s house to tell them about him becoming a prince. Now that Kaden knows how my dad really feels about our engagement; he feels like my dad should have been honest with him if he didn’t want him to propose to me yet. However, today is a better day because my birthday is August thirtieth! Today is the fifteenth, so it is getting close. This year I am turning sixteen! The theme for my party is the beach! My mom had mailed my invitations a couple days ago and had invited me to go with her Friday to purchase the remaining supplies for my party.

Kaden took both of my hands in his. Come with me, he urged as we started upstairs. We went to our room and sat on the patio.

    What’s the matter? I asked.

I have some bad news! Kaden replied sadly.

    Is it me?

Kaden grinned. No. My Beauty. My dad is ill!

Oh, that is not good! Will he be alright?

I am praying that he will be. He has pneumonia.

I looked at Kaden with shock and sadness. I’m sorry to hear this.

He is in the hospital right now. The doctor said he’s improving, but not to get excited too fast.

I don’t understand. If he is improving, then you should be happy.

Pneumonia’s unpredictable. He could be fine one day and gone the next.

    I will pray for him.

Thank you, Sara. He kissed me.

    Does Heather know?

She knows, but she is good about holding in her emotions around people most of the time.

I really hope he gets well soon and stays well.

    I hope so too, Sara!

I don’t mean to change the subject, but I was planning to invite my friends over to hang out by the pool."

I think I will give my mother a call to check on my dad and complete some things while you hang out with your friends.

After I phoned my friends I ran upstairs and put on my bathing suite then I lay out on a pool chair as I waited for my friends to arrive.

After about twenty minutes all of my friends arrived together. Susie and I lounged on the pool chairs enjoying the sun.

How has life been here? Susie asked.

It has been great! It was hard to get accustomed to wealth because Kaden’s family has so much money; and I’ve always dreamed of living at a place like this, but I never thought it would happen to me.

What do you think about Kaden becoming a prince?

    Anna told you?

Yes. She seemed like she was the one that was going to be a princess as excited as she was. She laughed.

I smiled. I like it a lot, but it’s hard for me to take in becoming a princess.

It would be hard for me too. I don’t think I could do it.

I am afraid I won’t be able to live up to my royal status.

I’m sure everyone has already told you this, but I know you can do it.

I giggled. Yeah, everyone has told me that already. So how have you been doing?

I’ve been peachy! I met a guy through Facebook. He lives in Utah.

That’s great! Does he like you?

He’s crazy over me! His name is Josh. We’ve been internet dating for a couple weeks now, and he wants to go to the next level!

Isn’t that too soon? Don’t get me wrong, but you haven’t even met him face to face.

That’s what I told him. I’ve really fallen for him, but I think we should get to know each other more before we take the relationship to the next level.

I think that would be a good idea. I wouldn’t want to see you get hurt.

In my heart I want to trust that he’s being faithful, but my mind is telling me otherwise.

    Why are you thinking this?

When I called him one night he said he was at home in his room, but I heard music and communication in the background.

I sighed as I pulled in my lips. Are you sure you want to date Josh?

I asked him later on why he lied to me and he said he didn’t want to tell me he was at a party because he thought I might get mad.

Did he say what kind of party he was at?

His oldest cousin was being thrown a graduation party.

Do you think he was being honest?

I don’t know? I really want to give him a chance. I am falling for him.

Like I said I don’t want to see you get hurt.

She slightly smiled. I appreciate that you care so much about me, Sara.

You’re my friend. How could I not care about you?

She grinned. What do you say we join Anna and Lucy in the pool to show them up on how to play volleyball?

I grinned widely as we jumped into the pool splashing Anna and Lucy. We played five games. Lucy and I won two games, and Susie and Anna won three games.

We all lay out in the sun on pool chairs as we tanned.

So Anna has told me that your future husband is a soon to be prince, Lucy said to me.

You know too? Anna, how many more people are you going to tell? I joked.

Oh, the whole wide world of course, Anna laughed.

I smiled. Yes, Kaden is going to be prince of Rome.

And Sara is going to be the most gorgeous princess of all time, Susie grinned.

    Oh, you guys, I said.

We talked and laughed for what seemed like hours until Anna’s Mom arrived to take them home. Once they left I showered then Kaden and I held hands as we strolled around town.

Did you have a good time hanging out with your friends? Kaden asked.

I sure did! Anna is going around telling everyone she knows that you are going to be a soon to be prince, I replied.

    Are you ashamed?

I giggled. No. How is your Dad doing?

    He’s doing well.

That’s good to hear. I am going to be sad to see Susie move to Utah!

There’s nothing you can do about it.

I know. She has met a guy through Facebook that lives in Utah. I didn’t want to tell her this, but I don’t think she should date him.

    Why?

She told me that she phoned him one night and he lied about being at a party. He claimed he didn’t want to tell Susie he was at a party afraid; she would have gotten mad.

A guy tends to lie to their girl when they feel like if they told her the truth she’d think foolish thoughts and take the whole situation to thought in the wrong way.

Will you ever lie to me even if you knew I’d take the situation in the wrong way?

I will always tell you the truth.

I smiled. Good. Because there will be major consequences if you ever tell me a lie.

He pushed up his shoulders as he pretended to be scared.

I laughed at him and shoved him only to bring him right back to me as I kept hold of his hand. We continued to walk a ways more into town then we decided to turn around and head home.

    16th Birthday Party

Summer went by too fast. Today was the first day of 10th grade. Kaden no longer attends school because he was granted permission to graduate. I am glad I am no longer a freshman! This past month of summer Kaden and I went tubing on Lake Tahoe on the border of California and Nevada. It was gorgeous! I had so much fun there. We also went to King’s Dominion and Myrtle Beach four times. I visited my parents several times. The rest of the summer Kaden and I lounged around the mansion.

When I arrived at homeroom which was in the same location as last year, I took out my schedule. I had English two, biology, world geography and Algebra two. Soon the end of the school day came. I was so excited to see Kaden! When I got into the truck, I kissed him like I had never kissed him before.

    Whoa, Sara, Kaden chuckled.

I’ve missed you! I replied smiling.

While you’ve been in school today I’ve thought of how you can skip 11th grade.

How would I go about doing that?

Well, you’ll have to speak with your responsible teacher to see if you have enough credits to pass.

I don’t know who that is.

Go to the office and they’ll tell you.

When we arrived at the mansion Kaden helped me out, but softly pushed me up against the truck as he shut the door; kissing me like I had kissed him when I got out of school.

Then he took my book bag from me and held my hand as we went inside. After I completed my homework and we consumed dinner Kaden and I sat out on the patio connected to our room.

How do you like you classes so far? Kaden quizzed.

    They’re fine, I replied.

Well, don’t give too much information now my brain might explode. He chuckled.

I giggled. What’s there to tell about school? It’s what you would expect.

Well, I did a brave thing while you were in school today. I went to your parent’s house and spoke to your father about his displeasures towards our engagement.

Oh, that was brave. How’d it go?

Better than I expected. He accepts our engagement, but made it clear you were to finish school.

    Of course I will.

He also made it extremely clear that I was not to get you pregnant and I told him that wouldn’t be an issue because we are remaining absent from sexual intercourse until our wedding night.

Did you tell him we’ve had sex once already?

Do you want to come home and find me beaten black and blue? He joked.

    I giggled. No.

    I told you Mom though.

What she have to say about that?

She was angry at first, but came to realize that I was respectful enough to come to her and tell her. She was going to have you move back home until you were eighteen, but then she changed her mind.

What made her change her mind?

I’m not sure? I’m glad she did though.

    Why?

Because I wouldn’t want to help you pack up all your things and move it all back to your Mom’s.

    I huffed. You’re rude!

    He
